no increase in ip profile - why

[link to this post]

hi there

last Saturday i had a power cut and when power came back my router re synced at 3900kbps and then dropped the ip profile to 3000, i always get just over 4000kpbs when i re sync late at night (stay sycned at this all the time for weeks on end)

when i got back in late last Sunday night i re synced my line has had a sync of 4032kbps for 80 hours and counting, but my ip profile is still 3000kbps , this should have increased to 3500 by now.

am i right in thinking it takes up 72 hrs for your profile to catch up with your sync?

what could cause the delay such as the one i am seeing,

many thanks

It's meant to take up to 5 days now to get the profile raised automatically. Large percentage changes are meant to happen faster.

I'm a bit surprised it hasn't already increased. It's worth waiting a couple of days before complaining. Are you sure you haven't had any other bad syncs recently? That would restart the 5 day period.

John2007 is quite right.

It changed in August 2008, see this page for a fuller explanation of how it works.

Amazingly most large ISP help desks are as unaware of the change as you were smile.

(Edit - There is a trick you can employ if you have a small increase expected like yourself, and have courage tongue. Only worth doing though during the first day, certainly not now in your case, and needs a router where you can tweak the noise margin.)

After 8 day my ip profile has not increased , so seems like i have a stuck ip profile?

i have rung isp (post office) they said the only thing that can be done is a snr reset, is that correct?

won't that put me in a new 10 day training period?, and is there a chance i would not get my ip profile of 3500 back?

is there anything else that can be done besides an snr reset?
many thanks

(Edit, seeing john's post made while I typed mine - a look at the stats now, including the error figures would be worthwhile first. End of edit).

Last thing to try is to turn the router off for at least 20 minutes. I suggest 30. Sometimes that can trigger it, and if it works it would be immediate.

If that fails then an snr reset by the Post Office is the way it usually gets sorted these days, though that is a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Yes, it does do a new 10-day training period, but in your case that isn't a worry. For more info on what it does see this page on my website.

As long as your sync is 4000+ then you will get the 3500kbps profile back.

Good luck, and let us know how things go.

I see at some point you have disconnected/reconnected. 2.5 days ago? Any particular reason, and have you done several?

If it is an 834Gv4 then instructions, to get the full stats, either use DMT or make sure telnet is enabled if you are on Vista or Win 7, then:-
Netgear instructions are:-

(Before you can telnet into a Netgear router you need to enter the following in your browser URL bar:-

http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?todo=debug

That opens a window empty except for Debug Enabled. You can close that window immediately).

telnet 192.168.0.1
adslctl info --stats

There is also the possibility with those stats that an snr reset will take you up to a 4000kbps IP Profile.

Has there been a history of instability?

i have no instability on my line been at 3.5 profile and just over 4000 sync for the last 4 yrs are so.

i have v3 of the router

For v3

http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?todo=debug

From a command prompt

telnet 192.168.0.1

then

cat /proc/avalanche/avsar_modem_stats

exit

opened cmd typed "telnet 192.168.0.1" and got the following

C:\Users\Home User>telnet 192.168.0.1

Windows?

I think telnet is an optional program you need to add/install from the control panel (at least that's my memory). Alternatively I'm sure there are free telnet client programs available on the www.

They look fine to me as long as your router has been up for several days (if it was several minutes I'd be concerned about the error counts).

One last question. Have you tried getting the stats from the test socket within modernish BT master sockets? You'd normally expect to sync a little bit higher with a 39dB attenuation.

hi there

i am on a market 1 exchange ( live in a small village) so no cheap packages as such (no llu),

although i am very happy with the Post Office with home phone and broadband extra for 26.05 a month, no one can come close to them in terms of price, features and usage on a market 1 exchange. i have never seen slow speeds in the year or so i have been with them even at peak times.

once again many thanks

The overnight re-sync is odd. If it happens again, please get the stats before rebooting.

Do you know whether you have a static or dynamic IP address?

It might be useful to download RouterStats and keep track of what your noise margin is doing. Set it to save graphs, and set the sampling interval to the lowest, I think that is 5 seconds. Setting it to log to file is a good idea too.

The good news is that your 5088kbps connection will get an IP Profile of 4000kbps if it is stable.

hi there i just had a look at my starts as my internet was running slow , here they are

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5088 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 39 db 10.5 db
Noise Margin 0 db 23 db

the noise margin of 0 db looks concerning ? does this mean the router is due to re sync itself at a lower sync rate? , many thanks

Yes, you have a highly variable noise margin, so may be best (for now) settling for the 4000+ mark to get a 3500kbps profile.

It would be a good idea to install RouterStats as I suggested. That is really good for spotting patterns in the variation, and may even give a clue to the cause. It could very well be something under your control and easily fixed, so you could get a 4000 or 4500 profile. A line the length of yours ought to be able to.
