Crazy adsl issues

My internet connection over the last few weeks has been shocking. Dropping every 10mins (occationally you would get a few hours) yesterday is would not SYNC at all so I phone talk talk and BT.

BT said there was no problem on the line but 'cleared' it anyway. I told talk talk what BT said and they went through all the obvious things like switching on and off, filters and RJ11 cables etc and I told them I had tried all that.

So they have arranged for an engineer to come and have a look tomorrow afternoon.

These where typical STATS from the router yesteday (fo the few secs it SYNC'd):

I forced the router to connect ADSL2, ADSL2+ and AnnexM and they all looked petty much the same (on ADSL2 the attenuation went down to 53 but SNR stayed at aound 0.
Before yesterday it would jump up and down between 8 and 2.5

I switched the router off last night as the flashing adsl light was mocking me, I just got in now and switched it back on and it SYNC'd and connected straight away and has been 100% stable so far (couple of hous))

I think someone is messing with me! Minutes afte I made this thread the ADSL dropped and took a few mins to re-sync, its now gone back to ADSL1 (I've got the router set to auto connect)

before it dropped last time the SNR margin went down to 1.0

Rob,

Don't forget that ADSL operates at radio frequencies (RF) and therefore the front end has tuned components... how old is the router? I had not dissimilar problems with a Draytek router (these are superb, if you can afford them) which were cured by a hardware repair by Draytek.

I have the talk talk supplied Huawei router which iirc it is less than a year old.

I have tried a Billion router that I had spare and that was the same.

Do a quiet line test ASAP (especially as the fault is occurring) and let us know how you get on.

Make sure you do this test whilst plugged directly into the master socket with the front panel removed, so internal extension wiring is removed from the equation.

I've hear crackling on the line loads of times in the past though.

Look at your SNR - down at -1 on the first set which means from sync to stats it dropped around 6dB and only just holding 2400 ... Then on the second 10dB and 4200 again a 4dB improvement in te few moments from sync to stats.

My first checks would be to try and find out if there is a large variable noise source somewhere that is causing interference. It could be in your house, a generator down the street ... Turn off everything in the house and just run the router and PC - but it could also be the PSU for one of those - however you say that you changed modems at one time, but was the Huawei power supply still plugged in?

I thought I should update and close this thread.

The talk talk man came and decided my router was faulty, I was sceptical but since he fitted a new router it has been perfect so who am I to argue.
