My exchange is EMBREAD.
Samknows has stated for a while that FTTC would be enabled in Sept 2011. I've recently seen a lot of Openreach activity and now Samknows states FTTC available in some areas.
I'm a bit confused by this, does this mean that only certain properties will be enabled or will it be rolled out to the whole exchange?
I finally thought my years of 2.5Meg were over, surely my hopes wont be dashed again?

Check what the BT Wholesale Checker states for your telephone number in the first place.
This will give you an indication if the PCP you are connected to has been given a date for FTTC going live. If no date is available, then your CAB is not yet planned.

|
|
|
No mention of FTTC on the checker.
So how long am I looking at for fibre? Days, weeks, months?!?!?

So how long am I looking at for fibre? Days, weeks, months?!?!?
BT, like God, moves in mysterious ways their wonders to perform.
It's all market-driven, they want to make a few £££ for the Shareholders.
However, saying that, my Exchange (Newport Pagnell in Bucks) was enabled fairly early on and my village got FTTC a few months ago. Was one of the first connections to the Cabinet and it's a great improvement to the previous 1.5Mbps ADSL speed.
This Exchange is not exactly the centre of Empire, so there is hope for you yet.

I was under the (probably naive) impression that once the exchange was enabled, all the cabinets would be enabled, thus all properties would be able to get it, a bit like LLU. So what you're basically saying is that although the exchange is enabled it could be a long time before I can get it?
|
|
|

You may never get it. Your local cab needs to be "enabled". Look for a newish looking cab next to the old one.

There is an Openreach document leaked recently, that detailed exactly which PCP's would be FTTC enabled. Maybe someone on here still has a copy and would be able to give you some info?

Thanks for that BatBoy.
Eddie,
If you download that Document, you can check on you Post Code if your PCP is in line to be FTTC enabled.

[censored] hell, looks like my cabinet is due to be enabled!!
Any ideas what the 'uplift' column is for?
Thanks for all this info by the way.
|
|
|
I think it is the average % uplift in speeds from current ADSL speeds. I could be wrong!!
|
|
|
|
Its an estimate of the likely increase in line rate over exchanged based ADSl2+ in a given post code area e.g. uplift 2.5 estimates a 2.5 times increase in line rate with VDSL2 over exchange based ADSL2+

In simpleton terms please?
Exchange is not currently ADSL2+ enabled
Currently sync at 3392 and uplift is 10

Eddie, I went from a 1Mbps connection to 40Mbps !!! Throughput is always around 36-37Mbps.

My cabinet is due to be enabled; other cabinets in the main road have been, but the estimated date on the BT checker has moved from Sep 2010, Mar 2011, Jul 2011, Sep 2011 and is now Dec 2011. So its very much a case of waiting :-/
James - be* pro - on THFB - sync about 17.2mbps - BQM

Interesting, i grabbed a copy of that doc and checked my postcode, it appears the FTTC column lists me as FTTP rather than FTTC.
Does anyone know if this actually means BT are considering rolling out fibre to the premesis in the near future (within a few years)?
|
|
|
Urm FTTP is part of their fibre roll-out, not something a few years away, i.e. initial trial areas done, but found things took a bit longer to do i.e. more man hours than expected.
So yes areas will be getting it.

I know trials had been done but I didn't realise some areas were getting actual FTTP rollout.
What info is there on FTTP? Does that mean there will be an advanced selection of packages for FTTP users who can get much faster speeds, or will it just be the same kind of packages that BT offer in the "infinity" range, or whatever it's called.
Right now I'm on VM 50Mbit waiting on 100mbit upgrade which is not yet scheduled to be done in my area, although I did get the upload upgrade.
If BT can plumb in FTTP and provide 100mbit first then I might be on board that.
|
|
|
What packages will be available is largely down to the retailer of which Infinity is just a number

Packages have yet to be finalised with us and I guess thats going to be the same with other providers, we have quite a few people on FTTP trials now, and with the exception of installation times taking quite a bit longer the service seems to be running very well.

Ah right.
So wholesale it's enabled up to 110mbit, I take it that the actual maximum speed will be higher? I wonder how VM will respond with the 100mbit upgrades, I think theirs is tested up to approx 300mbit, hope they respond to 110mbit with a higher package

So wholesale it's enabled up to 110mbit, I take it that the actual maximum speed will be higher? I presume you mean "higher than 40Mbps" . Difficult for it to be higher than the wholesale enablement.
I believe BT Retail just supply it as Infinity but with the full 100Mbps. I'm sure there was a post or two about it a few weeks ago, including someone who has it.

I expect BT Retail to just call it Infinity or the catchy 'Infinity and Beyond' with a Toy Story tie in

When I said maximum speed, I mean the possible future speed of the technology, BT are selling infinity as 40mbit and made wholesale 110, but can the line handle more, the VM Coax is tested a lot higher than even 100mbit to my understanding, I'm just wondering about future competition between FTTC/FTTP with VM and BT.

|

The 40meg product is FTTC
110Meg is the FTTP product
VM has bonded some 16 channels to give 1.5Gbps, and the FTTP from Openreach should scale to 1Gbps easily.
10Gbps is still pretty expensive even for data centre use. Many web sites are still hosted on 100Meg links, so going beyond that is pretty much a waste at this time.
