Visit http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php select your modem/router and post the ADSL stats or feed them into http://www.farina1.com/adsl and you will get estimates as to what the line is capable of, based on the actual data.

Ideal world where everything is perfect I would expect 20000Kbps
If your stats are with the modem on the end of an extension cable etc, then not bad really.
Always worth checking what you get using the test socket on the master socket, i.e. which removes any influence from your in house wiring.

im in the master socket. is plusnet LLU or do they use adsl max? i really want too move away from talktalk as i dont like there customer service. as you say i shud get 20meg on my line. thanks

Plusnet is not LLU, and in fact ADSL Max is now dead anyway. It has been replaced by IPSC on non 21CN WBC exchanges, and WBC on WBC-enabled ones.
IPSC is very like ADSL Max, with up to 8Mbps. WBC is up to 24Mbps like most LLU.
If you check your exchange through this link and post the URL of the result, we can tell you which you will get.

In reply to a post by Anonymous: im in the master socket.
The test socket is inside the master socket, and can make a big difference if there is anything the matter with the wiring in your house. See the socket on the wall at the back in this pic.

Using the samknows exhange checker it says that on our local exchange BT still uses the old ADSL Max, not IPSC. Fortunately, we also have the CPW LLU.
Just curious: What is IPSC anyway? Never heard about it before.

That will just be that samknows has left the title unchanged, as from the user point of view there is no technical difference. Big difference at the ISP end though, and all the way through the BT backhaul to get there.

No real difference there then, so the home phone wiring isn't affecting things. You don't use a plug-in phone extension cable between the socket and router though do you?
TalkTalk throttle P2P heavily. Anything else should be fine. That speed test is very poor though, as you say!

no extension cable at all and no sky tv on my line. i also changed my filter but no change. Think im going to sign up too plusnet im sure they are better then talktalk n im sure i will get more then 15meg with them. i think talktalk are just messing me about with my line speed. is it true that plusnet have all uk based call centres?

You need to check your exchange with the link I gave you. That will tell us whether Plusnet can give you up to 24Mbps or only up to 8Mbps.

my exchange is rochdale

Right - yes, Plusnet will connect you at similar speeds to TalkTalk, as the exchange is WBC-enabled. (Up to 24Mbps).
However, do you do a lot of P2P/torrents? Plusnet traffic shape a lot, see the tables on this page.
You have several other good ISPs there as well, and some of them don't throttle or traffic shape.
Is your phone with Tiscali/TalkTalk as well?
How much are you paying, and does that include the phone line rental?

yes i have everything with talktalk. im on the plus package. paying 14.99plus 13.80 line rental. i do alil p2p but not much. talktalk have traffic management but only download from p2p if i need to in the day time.

I gave you some garbage in my previous post. Plusnet, and most other ISPs, will connect you faster than 15Mbps that you have from TalkTalk, and I would expect the throughput speed to be better if you don't hit traffic management.
So I suggest you try Plusnet Extra, and if you find the traffic management gets to you then add the Pro option to get rid of it.
You might find Plusnet costs a bit more than TalkTalk.
I think you will need a "SIM ultaneous Provide", as if your line is TalkTalk LLU which it sounds like it has to be taken back off them, and without a SIM provide that could leave you with no broadband for 2-3 weeks. I suggest you register on these forums, then you can post in the Plusnet one and ask other users what they think. Also, more importantly, you would be able to PM bpullen who is a great Plusnet Rep on here, and ask him to organise the SIM Provide, as they often go wrong.

One thing i noted from the supplied stats is the high 12db magins set by tt on a short line for heavens sake, i would see if you can get them to lower it to at least the default of 6db and try fast path as well, then you could see 21-22mbits sync, + you would see the full 24 mbit sync at a 3db margin fast path, maybe worth your time to join their tt users forum and ask for the profile changes to be made to your line config, before jumping ship, don't try going though their useless tech support on the phone they don't have a clue and don't give a dam,
One thing to consider with plus net or any other isp who resells a bt product, is it would be subject to the bt dlm and also the stupid lower than you can get profiling system ,

Could of gotten a profile change on the TT forums.

Already suggested that,

Now have seen the test socket, yeap, looks like 12 db target which may be losing the 3 or 4Meg extra.
TalkTalk is usually better performance wise too, i..e got a slower line I can use, but performs better than this users. It may be there is a lot of people on TalkTalk on that exchange and congestion is an issue with TalkTalk

not really, Plusnet for one have pure 20CN connectivity still don't they ? Several large ISPs use IPSC to pick up data at BRAS interconnects rather than ye olde centrals, rest on centrals.
