What speed can my phone line support?

We're thinking of going for up to 20mb broadband service, at the moment we're on 8.

That's our infomation from our o2 Wireless Box, though if we get up to 20mb we're thinking of switching to BT

You may be on the o2 8Meg capped service, but your modem is already running in ADSL2+ mode

DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A is what tells us that. G.992.5 means ADSL2+

You are currently connected at just 2288Kbps which is awfully low for your line attenuation (line length) of 33.5dB.

You should really be connecting at the full 8Meg now, based on the data. So suggests there may be a wiring issue in the property.

Can you connect the ADSL modem to the test socket which is underneath the removeable faceplate on the master socket (phone book has more details on this) and post the figures from the modem again.

You'd get about 13 Meg on an uncapped service, but you should be getting the full capped 8 Meg now.

Don't even consider switching until you've sorted out your wiring issues.

Not entirely sure what you mean when you say to plug the modem into the test socket thing.

XRaySpeX, do you reccommend getting a technician involved since we're clueless?
And also we've decided to switch to Virgin Media, the installation is starting on the 1st of November, since we're switching to fibre optic cable do we still need to get the wiring sorted out?

No, you can leave it alone as Virgin doesn't use the BT phone line.

Connecting to the TEST socket (inside the BT mastersocket) eliminates any issues with the phone wiring, extensions etc within the house.
