I want to use a second BT2700HGV as a repeater - I hope repeater is the right phrase ! My broadband line comes in to an existing 2700HGV (2006) but because of thick walls, the wireless signal doesn't get all around the house. I want to connect a second 2700hgv (2007) using an ethernet cable to repeat the signal about 20 metres away in the loft. In another thread it was indicated this is 'easy' ? Can you confirm and advise please. My skill & knowledge of configuring wireless is almost zero but I can follow simple clear instructions
Thanks in anticipation

Absolutely NO problems whatsoever.
Firstly, can you get the firmware for both devices. There are some minor differences which I can guide you through. At present I have 5 2700s set up as WAPs here.
Also, what IP address does the main 2700 use and what DHCP range is set.

I have a pair set up this way and it works really well. The gateway unit runs BT v6.3.9.63 firmware, the "repeater" unit is running Qwest firmware QT04-6.1.5.48
I find the qwest interface a lot cleaner although it doesn't generate the same detail in stats but for the repeater that doesn't matter

Given the OPs comment: My skill & knowledge of configuring wireless is almost zero but I can follow simple clear instructions
And that he has 2006/07 units then there is a good chance one will have v4 firmware and the other could have v5 or v6. The pages, are different, and to take him through the set-up it will be easier if the details are known.

From my existing 2700hgv, I pulled this information: Hardware version 2701-100588-005
Firmware version 6.3.9.63-plus.tm. Where do I find the Firmware information for the second 2700 which is still in the box ?
Where do I find the DHCP range ?
Thanks for the response

Go to: Home/xslt?PAGE=C_2_3 for the DHCP range.
For te second Hub.
Power it up - but with NOTHING connected.
Disconnect your PC from the first - by removing the cable or turning wireless off.
Connect an Ethernet cable from the PC to the second hub.
Then use the <Windows> key and <R> at the same time.
In the box type CMD and then enter
A new window should open and type in: ipconfig /renew and enter
Open your browser and go to: HOME (just type that in te address bar) and it should bring up the 2700 pages ... and then find te firmware the same way as before - if it is a 2006 unit it may look different.
Disconnect from te Hub, reconnect your other Hub and you may need to do an ipconfig/renew again.

Richard Hi Richard, for the correct terminology, the 2Wire 2700HGV wireless router cannot be used as a wireless repeater, but can be used as the wireless access point.
A wireless repeater is not connected to the main router with Ethernet cable it connects by wireless and then repeats that wireless signal onwards.
To configure the DHCP in your 2Wire 2700HGV router go > http://192.168.1.254 > Home Network > Advanced Settings.
The links will help you configure your other 2Wire 2700HGV router to convert to a wireless access point

That really will confuse him.
Using a 2700(v6) there is no Home Network Tab and secondly no Advanced settings tab either. And you cannot assume that the router is at 192.168.1.254 either
I have already posted the CORRECT page link.

I have already posted the CORRECT page link. Hi, oh well, hell just have to figure it out and ignore my info on configuring the router, but the links will be useful.
I have a job keeping up with the different firmwares, I know users get mixed up with describing the hardware types and firmware versions. The default address for the 2700HGV routers I have used has always been 192.168.1.254 and this should be changed for security.

Good morning and thanks for the previous replies. Having learned that it is perfectly possible to use a second BT 2700 HGV as a WAP, I have now run 20m of Ethernet cable round the house and into the hall where I want the Wireless Access Point located. As you are aware, the intention is to use this ethernet cable to link the primary Voyager 2700 in my office, to the second Voyager 2700 in the hall.
Following your instructions, I ascertained the following from the "Details" page of the second BT Voyager 2700HGV.
Hardware: 2701-100589-005
Software: 5.29107.12
I note the new 2700 system used the phrase "Software" whereas on my existing 2700 used the phrase "Firmware". I assume this makes no difference ?
Is this sufficient information ?
Thanks
Richard

Software/firmware -- does not matter.
Why does it have to be a V5 - the only one I don't currently have access to. I have one in my Scottish location but cannot access it from here at present.
The V5 is similar to the later V6 ...
You need to connect the remote/slave to teh PC in te same way as before.
Then: select <SETTINGS> from the top set of tabs, followed by <LAN> at the next level down.
At the next level <Private Network> which will bring up a configuration page:
Uncheck the DHCP Enable button - so it is disabled (ignore teh warning as you do not want DHCP)
Under DHCP Network Range select <Configure Manually> and enter teh following:
192.168.1.100
255.255.255.0
"leave blank"
"leave blank"
and SAVE.
Disconnect the PC ...
Connect the two 2700s - any Port from the master and Port 1 on the slave.
Connect PC to the master, and check you have internet access - if not an IPCONFIG/renew (as before) may be needed.
Then, in a browser, 192.168.1.100 and you should have access to the slave 2700 and set up your wireless connection.

Thanks for the quick response - V5 ? Murphy's law of course .......
I have the second 2700 connected to a laptop with wireless signal disabled. The instructions you gace did not match my screen. What I see on my screen is as follows
"Top Line" Tabs: System, Broadband Link, Local Network, Voice Network, Firewall
Under System, I have the following tabs:
Summary, System Password, Date & Time settings, Details
Under Broadband Link I have the following tabs
Summary, Details, Diagnostics, Statistics, Advanced Settings
Under Local Network
Summary, Wireless Settings, Fusion settings, Advanced settings
Under Voice Network
Digital Voice
Under Firewall
Summary, Firewall Settings, Advanced settings
Thanks

So, it could be similar to a V4 ...
Try
<Local Network>
<Advanced Settings>
and enter settings in teh Private Network area.

That didn't work at all unfortunately . Under the Tab 'Local Network' Sub Tab - Advanced Settings
Private Network :
Made the changes
'configure manually'
Router Address: 192.168.1.100 ( it was 192.168.1.254)
Sub Mask 255.255.255.0
DHCP unchecked
hit Save
However the unit will not now respond. When I type "Home" into the IE address box (http://HOME) it states "Internet Explorer cannot Display the Webpage" Can't get to that page at all, it just sits frozen or locked. The only thing I can see is by going through
Start, Run, CMD, Ipconfig/all which then shows
DHCP Enabled - yes
Autoconfiguration enabled - yes
Autoconfiguration autoadrdress 169.254.174.97
subnet mask 255.255.0.0
Any suggestions ?
Thanks
Richard

That is what I would expect ...
Connect the two 2700s and connect yourself to teh primary/master.
Do an IPCONFIG/renew
Then see if you have web access ... then try the 192.168.1.100

Hi
because it was all just "frozen" and wouldn't allow me to do anything, I found the instructions for Reset to factory settings which I pressed. now using the DOS window and the Ipconfig/all command it shows
DHCP Enabled - yes
Autoconfiguation enabled - yes
IP address 192.168.1.1
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway: 192.168.1.254
DHCP Server 192.168.1.254
DNS Server 192.168.1.254
lease onbtained 07/06/12 13:13
leae expires: 08/06/12 13:13
Internet explorer will not go to http://home it sits frozen with the words
"waiting for res://ieframe.dll/offcand.htm..."
What next ?
Thanks for your patience

Hi Richard, If you follow my original post it should help you configure your second 2700HGV router as the wireless access point.
This example is with the router default IP address Important your main router and the wireless access point must be within the static IP address range.
http://192.168.1.254 >Home Network or Local Network >Advanced Settings
I have my main router Home/Local Network IP schema
Static IP Addresses: 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.20
First DHCP Address: 192.168.1.21
Last DHCP Address: 192.168.1.250
Static IP Addresses: 192.168.1.251 to 192.168.1.255
Configure your 2700HGV wireless access point within the Static IP address range.
http://i.dslr.net/pics/faqs/image93081.jpg
Change the router default IP address for security, change the third octet - choose something between 11 and 255, anything below 11 is fairly common.
Example: Change the router default IP address 192.168.1.254 to 192.168.19.251 all the home/local network settings must also be changed with the third octet to 19.
