On standard settings that's about as good as it gets. There certainly doesn't seem to be any problem.
If the line is more stable than the average then there could be scope for squeezing another Mbps out of it. I don't know the best way of going about that on a Sky connection, sorry.

great, if you guys are happy then so shall i be

The "target" is the sync-time setting. After the sync is achieved the margin can vary by several dB. That's why it is set wel above zero, so that if it falls a few you don't lose connection.
I have a longer explanation on this page.

ah...ok, the sky techy that i spoke to over the phone was surprised of my line speed however i just wanted a second opinion on if it was (FLAT OUT)

Hi,
Lucky you, with that sync speed, my long line is slightly lower attenuation at 51db with 6db SNR and I struggle to get 4mb! So yours is excellent in my book.

Connection speed 4950 Kbps and the attenuation of 54dB
Then the range of speeds shown for that attenuation at http://www.farina1.com/adsl

Hi,
When I was with Sky with a 54dB attenuation I was getting only 1.5Mb with a bit of playing around with the noise on times I'd get around 2.2Mb, So with nearly 5Mb @54dB is very good.

Wierd. No. I'm fine .
When I clicked the link given, I got a 404.
I tried again. 404.
I shortened the URL to just www.farina1.com - fine, with a menu, one of the entries on that being the estimator page. Clicked the link in the menu, (which is the one I just gave), no problem - it worked.
I shortened the URL of the working link to be the same as the "faulty" link, 404.
Posted as earlier.
Now, and by the sound of it at just before 3 this morning, when you posted, the one Andrew gave works. However, it doesn't redirect to the one in his own menu. I suspect therefore that wherever the one we see on his given link is hosted, it is a duplicate, and was having hiccups.
Or even a triplicate. Examine and click the one on my Useful links page.
Though I suppose they could all be the same actual page even though the URLs stay different - I forget the term for that form of redirection. Goes to examine the sources of the result.
(Edit - a couple of typos).

How do you have three URLs for the same page though please Andrew? I just checked two of them, with no apparent redirection in the source.

Shirley it's www.farina1.com not www.farina.com
The estimator > http://www.farina1.com/adsl/default.aspx

Just one of the two typos in that post, (now corrected thanks ), but not relevant to what I was getting.

Yawn! Stretch. Time to do a few little jobs . . .
Hi Bob,
All the variations on the theme take me to Andrew's page -- so let's just file it under " Another of Life's Little Mysteries".
As it has been a long time since I last visited your Useful Links page, I've just given it the "once over" with a critical but sleepy eye.

default.aspx is the default page for that folder, hence no need to type it so
www.farina1.com/adsl
and
www.farina1.com/adsl/default.aspx
are one and the same.

As long as your IIS is configured correctly
Its possible Bob's browser is looking for index.htm/index.html first

Which would be odd behaviour, since a browser knows nothing about the server it is talking to when doing the iniitial HTTPGET

IE9 standard setup.
It looks to have been one of those things that just happen and never get explained. But I did sufficient diagnostics to confirm it was failing before I made my original post about it.

Agreed; but I've seen some odd behaviour in my logs (perhaps caused by transparent proxies, or faked User-Agents from malware).
e.g.
http://site.com/
versus
http://site.com
causing in the first case "index.html" to be returned, and in the second case for "Default.asp" to be returned. This is an Apache server on a Linux box, and the Default.asp file I left in the directory is an HTTP redirect to index.html
I thought it was IE6 that did this....
