My plasterer has managed to knock the NTE5 master off the wall, and 2 wires are now loose.
I have a white wire in terminal a
I have an orange wire in terminal b
I now have a green wire and a black wire loose, and 3 empty terminals - 2,3,5.
Which of these two wires goes into the three terminals?
That's how it should be.
Assuming no extensions
If the phone still works then do nothing!
Four wires (two pairs) come into your property, only one pair (two wires) is used.
A and B are for the incoming pair, the others are for wiring up extensions from the NTE5 - do you have any?
Ex <n>ildram , been to SKY MAX - 15,225 Download
BE Unlimited - 21,000 Download 1,200 Upload ON THE LINE THAT SKY COULD ONLY PROVIDE 15,255 DOWN AND 800 UP ON!!!,
Moved house, now BE Unlimited 6,500 Down, 1Mb/s up - gutted!

The phone doesn't now work, neither does the internet.
Both the loose cables have marks in them where they were previously fitted.
The Sky incoming telephone cable fits into the front of the box, and a telephone extension fits into that.
Remove the faceplate and test in the test socket.
An incoming phone line only needs two wires, connected one to A and one to B. Having more is very odd, and not what should happen.
The marks do they look like IDC cuts in the insulation? If so it is feasible that you had some odd wiring. Did the test socket work previously?

ok. Problem part solved.
The main controller for our cordless phones runs off an extension from the NTE5.
Therefore once I plug in directly, the phone works.
I now need to reconnect my two loose wires so that the extension works, but which wire goes to which terminal?
My next problem is to get Sky to find out why my internet is not working.
Pictures and diagram of the wiring would help us from guessing.
But the guess is the two wires with the cut marks on them go to pins 2 and 5, i.e. one to pin 2 and the other to pin 5

Does it matter which colour goes to terminals 2 & 5?
I have 2 colours loose - green and black.
Thanks for your hepl so far.

I think you mean the faceplate has been knocked off, not the backplate? See this pic. Am I right?
If so, to work out which colour goes on which pin, go and look at the extension wherever that is. Carefully open that and see the colours there. You want T2 = T2 and T5 = T5. If T3 is connected at the extension, ignore that wire at the NTE5. It's the ring wire and isn't usually necessary.
Don't strip insulation from the wires. Place them across the IDC connector and gently press them down between the jaws, which cut through the insulation as you can probably see. You can use something like the side of a credit card, but that if far from ideal! Best is a Krone/IDC tool from a DIY store or Maplin. A couple of quid and far safer.

My faceplate is slightly different to your picture, as I only have terminals 2,3,5.
Also, I have now plugged both the phone and internet into the baseplate, and both work, so the two loose wires must feed the faceplate.
Unfortunately, i don't know how to put photo's on here to show you.
Also, I have taken the front off the extension socket, and the wires are a completely different colour as they all have stripes, whereas mine are plain colours.
There is a picture of my socket on www.run-it-direct.co.uk/BTNTE5ADSLfaceplate.html

Unfortunately you can't post pictures here. You have to upload them to one of the many free sites them post a link for us . Can you confirm it is just that faceplate that has been knocked off, or the backplate as well?
The coloured wires at the extension are what we expect, but there should be corresponding ones at the NTE5, connecting to 2/3/5 as per the pic I gave you. The fact that yours only has those is not a problem, as 1/4/6 are redundant in the UK.
So it sounds as though there may be a junction box somewhere . How many extension sockets are there? I'm hoping there is at least one that may be fed by the two loose wires, and then a feed from there to the one you use.
The A/B on the faceplate are to feed ADSLx to the extension. Ah! Where you normally have your router?

Orange to 2 and white to 5. Don't worry about the green and black. Sounds like you have had an extension fitted with downlead.
I have white to A, orange to B.
I still have black & green to fit to the faceplate to make it work.
OK, backended then, green to 5 and black to 2
ok. Now the extension works, but when it is all fitted back together, there is no broadband.
Could it now be a faulty faceplate?
When the broadband is plugged into the backplate, it works ok.

Where do you connect the broadband, at the master or at the extension? (I asked earlier). I suspect you use the extension?

That's the behind of the backplate though. You think that's what he's looking at? I hadn't thought of that, though the colours agree. I've a feeling some of his posts wouldn't make sense if that was the case, so I'll have to read though again later.
Edit - just realised - I think you mean that's his?

Red and White still appear to be connected to A&B - test socket should still be OK?
Yes, we have established that the ORANGE and white are the feed, and all is well at the test socket, also that the green/black of the dropwire feeds the extensions elsewhere.
What isn't clear is why, according to the OP, it doesn't all work when reattached.
Right
Green and black are my unused incoming pair - so in this case the OP needs the green and black pair connected for an extension elsewhere which presumably became disconnected when the faceplate was removed when the plasterer unscrewed the entire nte5 from the wall?
Sounds like the the OP has a line that has been backended.
Yours is just a spare pair.
And the wires are long enough to reach to the back of the faceplate. So a junction box somewhere where the green and black change to whatever the stripey ones are at the extension.
We now need to know the colour on T2 and T5 at the terminal, and he has to find the junction box so we can see which way round to connect the black and green.

Well actually incoming redish/orangish and white together with green and black go to an external junction box then from there I have only have blue/white and white/blue (using an external quality 3pair cable) connected to the internal nte5.
Interesting that one can use the redundant pair to feed an extension but I guess that would require a junction box prior to the nte5?

Yes. This is frowned upon, but in practice appears to cause no problems.
Correct on the extension, suggests a junction box somewhere else on the property, and goodness knows what awaits us with that wiring.

Yes. This is frowned upon, but in practice appears to cause no problems.
In that case if one used an adsl faceplate filtered voice would be carried back along a 2 pair cable alongside an unfiltered incoming feed. Think I would be a little reluctant to do that...

In reply to a post by Anonymous: Broadband connected to the master
A thought just occurred to me when replying to 4M2.
You remember you gave us this link to what your faceplate looks like?
Looking at the rear view of it - the one on the right - there is something in the centre, and on our left near the bottom is a plug sticking out with four metal strips on it.
Is that present, or has it broken off inside the backplate socket? (Or gone missing entirely of course).
Edit - Typo.

Could well be since the phone works connected to the faceplate (?) - if an unfiltered faceplate with phone socket only and filter/splitter were tried broadband should be OK...just hope that in some way the OP is not attempting to get broadband from a filtered voice connection, although that seems very unlikely

...just hope that in some way the OP is not attempting to get broadband from a filtered voice connection, although that seems very unlikely More likely than my idea that the "plug" may have snapped off during the assault. If he's been using a filter into the test socket, it will only fit into the PSTN socket on the faceplate.

Bob,
Probably best to just work from the test socket at the moment: if the entire nte5 is unsupported I can imagine the orange and white incoming pair getting snapped off if there's too much fiddling about (or another "assault" LOL! ) Once the nte5 is securely fixed back onto the wall with the green and black pair accessible then the issues with them, the adsl faceplate and the extension can be sorted...what do you reckon?

Hi, for the modern digital telephone you now only need connections 2 and 5, the connection number 3 is the bell wire required for the old electro-mechanical telephone bell, it is better to not connect this wire as it can cause interference to your broadband connection.
