Why is your modem on the roof may I ask, do you find it works better at higher altitude? smile

As yarwell said I am on a wireless service, so the receiver is the equivalent of a modem. the ethernet cable runs down the outside of the wall, through a hole and then plugs first into a adapter to provide power to it and then to my router.

My mates FTTC connection, take 15 mins to sort itself out
Seems a long time... it doesn't happen to me often enough to give meaningful averages (and I've no intention of initiating it deliberately!), but a re-sync seems to take no more than 10-15 seconds, often a lot less, and the router about the same to get a working connection again.

IPv6 takes a bit longer to re-establish, but even then it's tens of seconds rather than minutes.
