Why is your modem on the roof may I ask, do you find it works better at higher altitude?
As yarwell said I am on a wireless service, so the receiver is the equivalent of a modem. the ethernet cable runs down the outside of the wall, through a hole and then plugs first into a adapter to provide power to it and then to my router.
