Conflicting broadband speeds

Recently changed broadband suppliers, to Talktalk. However, we are getting conflicting broadband speeds. Our Son's notebook flies along at around 130mbps, while the most we can get out of our own laptop is 54mbps, and sometimes no more than 1mbps, which is worse than we were getting with BT. This, despite the fact that they're both linked to the same wireless router. Anybody give me a clue, as the laptop signal and speed is so slow it very often won't connect at all. Oh, and our Son's XBox connection is affected by the use of the laptop or mobile phones

you're going to have to explain in more detail and be specific.

I think some of these are "wireless link speeds" eg the 130M and 54M, this is a willy-waving over the air datarate which carries much less actual data. A 54M 802.11g laptop will only download at about 20 Mbits/s of useful data.

Your son's laptop sounds like 802.11n capability, which is faster. This might get you to 50 Mbits/s of actual data.

If there is interference or a lot of other users on the same wireless channel you may not get the full speed, see what happens when sat next tot he wireless router.
