I am really annoyed with the plusnet "current line speed". Today I picked up a 5.05mb speed profile after being connected for about 14 days at 5750km/s sync. Plusnet I believe have a system that is a kind of profile at there end which controls the speed at there end in conjunction with Bt, my current line speed is stuck at 3.9mb/s and won't budge and when I do a speed test I'm getting 3.8mb/s so must be getting limited by the 3.9mb/s cap is there anyway to get that moved to the 5.05mb/s?
Thanks in advance!

It updates automatically a few times a day, but can fail. The other way is to ring support and get them to adjust it manually.

It's quite annoying how it sometime fails, is it worth giving it a few days to sort itself out?

If it isn't correct by the morning, it won't correct till the next time you disconnect the PPP session for a few minutes, and may even need a re-sync.
The update is triggered by BT systems when the above occur.

On an ADSL2 (21CN) line it takes about 3 days to for the Plusnet profile to reset to a faster line speed. If you want the speed reset more quickly you have to contact them.
The Plusnet profile system is a scheme which ensures that any reduction in line speed is extended for an additional 3 days. A needless degradation in performance.

Have you got any reference for that please? I've never seen it mentioned before. What I have seen PN reps say is that the update takes place two or three times per day.

I know because I have had to ring them. I have also seen requests made on their forum.

when BT used to have the 5 day wait the excuse was the server couldnt cope, I felt that had very little merit.
I suspect the reasoning for the long delays on plusnet is they are trying to hide speed variance on unstable lines that flip flop between speeds.
So eg if a line is on 3mbit sync for 2 days, then 5mbit sync for 2 days then 3mbit sync for 2 days and so on, the plusnet profile system will keep their speed permanently on 3mbit/sec and the end user wont see the 5mbit so then probabyl wont complain about a 5mbit speed dropping to 3mbit as its always at 3mbit, if that makes sense.
I dont see any other logical reason, but like you say I think its wrong, if they capable of dropping the profile so fast then they capable of increasing it also.

I don't think this correct anyway. I believe there is a misunderstanding somewhere or a first-line support person who needs "additional training".
As far as I know there has never been any mention of a 3-day delay for the Current line speed to update.

As far as I know there has never been any mention of a 3-day delay for the Current line speed to update. I've done 3 resyncs on a Plusnet 21CN line then monitored daily. Each time the current line speed has updated somewhere between 72-90hrs later.
It's problematic both ways (current line speed can be too high) and is just one of many reasons I'll be moving my friends and family over to someone else as soon as the 12 months is up.

Did you monitor when the IP Profile changed?

Of course, that updated straight away.

I did a speed test this morning and have now been bumped up to a 5mb profile on plusnets side, checked he current line speed is now showing the 5mb/s. Took a long time to be honest.

Oh poo! Sorry, hit reply on the wrong post.

You've got your units wrong. I think it could take up to three hours because of when the scripts are run - but they've made another change recently which may have changed that.
Alternatively, you've got confused with the situation on 20CN where it typically took around 3 days for the IP Profile to change.
Note: Reposted as reply to correct post.

Well, it's official, Plusnet consider 5 days for their profile update to be timely.

Neither of your explanations is correct. I would say that the Plusnet web site says that the Plusnet profile should be updated more frequently. It maybe that they have improved their procedures since the last time I checked exactly what was happening.

We don't consider it to be timely at all, that example in question we didn't receive the line report through until 3 days after the resync.
When your line resyncs we then wait for a delta report to come through to notify us of the change in speed, we then run 6 scripts throughout the day;
0:05
3:05
6:05
17:05
20:05
So once we've received the update your profile should update within one of the script runs. Your line should then drop the PPP session, we've seen a few recently where this has taken time so the new profile is being seen by the customer.
If you can PM your username over if you think your line isn't updating I'd like to take a look as we've recently made some changes(and a few more to come soon) to improve this process.
|
|
|
|
So, a delay of around 48-72hrs after receiving the delta report and 12-18 failed script attempts is considered timely, thanks for the clarification. What do you think the max time to receive the delta report should be, to add on to this time?
You only listed 5 script times for the day by the way.
It's not my line/account, but you're right it hasn't been dropping the PPP session automatically either.
I wish you luck in fixing this (and all your other issues), it seems you've been trying for many years now on this particular one.
|
|
|
|
Sorry I meant 5 runs per day.
Normally the report we receive comes through within a couple of hours. Depending on when this comes through it will then get picked up on the following script runs.
We're also looking at implementing the scripts during core hours but we need to make sure it's functioning 100% correctly first.

Thanks for your help I'm now up on running on a decent speed. Would you like the username to check the account out?
