Xbox / Apple servers slow or it is my ISP?

[link to this post]

As per title... Had HyperOptic installed 2 weeks ago with their 1Gb product. My iMac is wired sees around 800 Mbps most days (plus or minus 50Mbps) and my Xbox One is also connected via Ethernet. The internal test on it showed it sees around 300 Mbps.

Having recently been updating my iMac and downloading several games from the Xbox store i notice that they are getting really slow speeds. For example Xbox downloads are always around 2-3 Mb/s and Apple store downloads are about 4-5 Mb/s. So literally both are never above 40 Mbps.

Is this the i assume the American Servers of both Apple or Microsoft that are the issue or is it HyperOptic and how they connect/peer to the servers wether they be American links or i assume at leat one of them has by now has European servers.

Anyone else (on other ISP's) find these servers never give above 40 Mbps?

During my use of 1gbit links during work i have noticed a lot of servers have a cap. At speeds over 500mbit you really start to see either server speed caps or congestion on the net itself or something. Probably the first. I have encountered it on super fast connections from different providers. Shouldn't really matter tho. At the speeds you do get. Always still very fast, faster than most peoples fibre your going to get your content or download in no time anyway.

Total transatlantic capacity in 2013 was 23Tbps (see Table 1). Allowing for 25% growth per annum, it may be around 45Tbps today. How much of that capacity do you want for your personal use?

I've never seen a download go above 40Mbps on my Xbox One, and they typically sit around 3 - 5Mbps anyway.

It's not your connection, Xbox LIVE seems to have some sort of cap.

Sadly if you don't live in blocks of flats in an area they are rolling out in, you have no chance in getting it.

They will only install in blocks of flats that have loads of interests (i.e. 12 to 20 homes might be more) and new builds where there is loads of new houses being built.

Nope its 80 homes required, here is from an email I was sent from them a while ago.

We do not rely on existing infrastructure and we install our own from end to end. In regards to the installations as a business we target either high-rise apartment buildings or large developments with multiple dwellings. We would be looking at a minimum of 80 flats so as to make our installation feasible.

In our case, a development with 75 low rise properties, flats and house, Hyperoptic were certainly interested although never consistent as to the contribution they required us to make On occasion they said none was needed on others a sum in the order of £20K. As you are probably aware, and for a number of reasons, the property owners chose instead to go with BT.

Cheers for that info.

I gave them over 600 houses within a 1/2 mile radius, with that town being less than 2KM from the main ring, (they said) and they said no.

This was years ago, so maybe I should try again. not for where i live, just a town where there are a lot of suffering companys who cant afford leased lines (I did suggest they all club in and share one, no one seemed to be interested)

Yeah, I recall you telling me that.

But talking about consistency Virgin Media was the same where it would promise me month after month that it will be done to then be told 7 to 9 months later they have no plans to install in my area for at least the next 20+ years.

At least Hyper-Optic gave me a straight answer in their first email reply.

BT Fibre team are also not consistent as well, one moment I get told one thing and a neighbour is told another, then 3 days later its vice versa, no wonder people are having a go at BT.

I have been told it might all be a go for a week or two for our FTTP smile

There was another 3 engineers at our Splitter Node today disconnecting all 100+ fibres and re-splicing them in their correct trays smile

Was told the engineers are due to arrive some time next week, so I am crossing my fingers LOL.

Was this Hyper-Optics ?

My email response was dated end of 2014.

They prefer flats due to they only need to install a single think fibre cable into the lobby of the flats where all the main hardware is installed and from there it gets split up to each of the flats.

That's why they don't really like houses, it might be different if they were still being built.

Now that does sound as if there's some progress at long last. I've always found it reassuring to actually see work being done rather than rely on what some distant person is telling me. In my case it was seeing the two guys breaking into our EO cable and diverting it via our new AIO cab. The downside being the footway chamber chosen for the joints, rather than it being one closer to the cab and the development, it has added 150m or more to the new D side. I was however impressed that the work was done without disrupting the phone lines or causing net connections to drop.

It's been quite a long haul for both of us and with luck and a fair wind I should have my FTTC connection sometime on Friday. I hope that you are similarly fortunate with the next couple of weeks. How I'd love a real fibre connection. I can't honestly see there being sufficient demand for our getting G.Fast once it starts to roll out in any scale but I can at least hope!

Yup, well our FTTP Order was suppose to of gone live on the 26 August but due to issues at our Splitter Node this didn't happen, now that work seems to of been done (i.e. engineers there for several hours, well approx. 4 to 6 or so hours) re-slicing all the fibres etc, so I am hoping its all go now due to the only issue was our splitter node.

What's the et we now get told there is an issue at the exchange LOL.

But yeah, we are (several homes) hoping this is it now smile

G.Fast might not do much for you due to you are that close to your fibre-twin, G.Fast is if I understand it correctly is more for people that are further away from their cabinet, granted it "may" help if you wanted the faster speeds in the ball park of +600Mbps but not too sure of the actual price bracket of it to make it worth while.

I know our 300:20 is about £50 pm of which is split up between the 5 of us here in our home, so its not that bad (a tenner each), I am hoping to get a "little" discount due to all the faffing about they put us through over the last 4.5 years, there is no harm in asking.

Apartments of just over 400 here.. went from 5 Mbps with Zen to the 1Gb. They have server cabinets under each block that then have bunches of ethernet cables up to each apartment.
We showed strong interest and I managed to convince the Factor & Owners association to go for it. They must have had a lot of pre-orders as the Engineers van has been at the property every week day since two fridays ago, 5-6 installs a day, probably be here for the next few days too.

Not cheap for them to install but they can get quick uptake from when the go live date...

I'm of the mind that receiving 40 Mbps downloads from a server ran by Microsoft or apple when were talking about multiple Gigabyte files is not acceptable. Especially when that is only 4% of what my connection can do.
