Any current Hotmail problems?

[link to this post]

A friend cannot access Hotmail "connection to the server failed". Anyone know of current problems? She can access the web, FB, etc.

Well can you access it?

According to my computer:

Windows Live Hotmail was replaced by Outlook.com in 2013

I've had real problems accessing my Outlook/Hotmail email account since the 11th October on my Ubuntu 14.04 LTS operating system and Firefox browser (I can access it with Thunderbird Mail though and also from Windows machines using both Firefox and I.E.) Problems started after Microsoft updated outlook dot live dot com and the Ubuntu Firefox combination seems to have issues with that update although it is accessible intermittently.

I routinely email, and get replies from, people with hotmail.com email accounts. I understood that hotmail effectively redirects to outlook.com so that users didn't need to change anything. Also, as the problem is very recent, then it's unlikely to have been the hotmail to outlook change.

It might have been replaced, for instance, mine is set to use "imap-mail.outlook.com" but the OP is complaining about an issue now.

I can use Thunderbird to access and retrieve "hotmail" maill without any problems. One running issue I have had with Firefox for quite a few months now and which returns the same error message every time, is if I don't include the "www." part. e.g. "live.com" doesn't work, whereas "www.live.com" does and brings up the log in page. Nigh on every other website I go to works fine with me just banging in the url without the "www." part included i.e. "facebook.com" on its own works. And using just "live.com" works fine using Opera, Chrome etc. Very strange.

Each of my Hotmail accounts recently received a (genuine) email from MS to say that the account was being moved to Outlook servers (described as being "more secure" etc). The only action needed on my part was, if I use Outllook email client, part of the Office suite (NOT Live Mail) I would need to re-register the accounts, i.e. delete them from the client and re-add them.

At about the same time, those accounts hit a problem syncing on my phone email app (Bluemail) so I deleted / re-added them on my phone, problem solved.

WLM (Windows Live Mail) has not been supported since 2012 (iirc) and has become increasingly problematical. I have stopped using it and now use Outlook client or just a web browser.

Other than that there is a ridiculous amount of junk email getting past the Hotmail filters straight into my inbox. It started in October and has improved but still rumbles on. Rules seem to have stopped working too.

Can your friend access access Hotmail by using a simple web browser at mail.live.com? (Google Hotmail login").

The best bet for accessing Hotmail in windows 10 is to use the built in email client

Tell your friend to log in to the web page - outlook.com - with her Hotmail details to check that the account is still live.

If this works then it's an issue with the IMAP/POP email settings on the PC/Laptop/Smartphone.

People have been getting confused with Microsoft's definition of "Alias" within the Outlook settings in conjunction with any new Outlook addresses/aliases which may have been set up.

If you were to delete the Hotmail alias in error within the Outlook settings, then you have deleted the email address and lost all stored emails. Some say there is a chance to resurrect the account after 30 or 60 days.

Surely that's "up to 30 or 60 days"?

No, as written, AFTER either 30 or 60 days. I have seen comments on forums quoting both periods.

It's possibly a way of weeding out dormant accounts whereby only those who really want the email address resurrected will try again after this period.

Remember that all emails have been deleted after aliases are deleted so there is nothing ro recover. Also, the sender has no bounce back alerts warning rhat the account is disabled.

It's the sort of quality service which I would expect from a free Microsoft product!

I use hotmail.co.uk in Thunderbird on Linux using Pop3 , I had no problems but my wife has,it started about a week ago, it shows a server error .
She can use her hotmail.co.uk account ok with 'webmail' .
I have spent a lot of time trying to solve this.

Perhaps her account has been moved to the Outlook.com service but yours has not, yet? As I said though, I did receive emails telling me my account was being moved, so if you've not been notified maybe you've not moved.

I did take a look and found that if you logon using webmail and see "Outlook Mail" or "Outlook Email" above the inbox you're on the new server, if you see "Outlook.com" you're on the old (yes, seems wrong way round doesn't it?). t I looked and my account shows "Outlook Email".

I also found that POP3 is switched off by default in Outlook.com and you need to switch it on, but you probably know that.

Good luck.

John

I've now found that it was an app problem on her smart phone !

However I've now found someone else who's had Hotmail problems for 3 or 4 weeks. She can use it via webmail but not via MS Office Outlook. I've asked her to check POP & SMTP settings just in case. If need be I'll go and have a look.

If you find a solution to your wife's Hotmail problems I would appreciate you posting it here.

Not yet, as far as I know. I only heard about it yesterday so there's been negligible time for her to do anything. And as she's a busy mother, and she can use webmail, it may not be her top priority.

Yes, as advised in Outlook.com migration changes; What do I need to know and do? I removed the Outlook Connector from OL 2003 and added back in my Hotmail a/c as POP3/SMTP. It reads emails but won't send (after a long delay it says SMTP does not support SSL, altho' I know it does), which is why I installed the Outlook Connector in the 1st place. I still use WLM for sending, which I rarely do.

Hotmail just stopped working in last hour on both OL & WLM on PC & Mail app on mobile. Of course creds & other settings are unchanged.

Webmail, of the "Outlook Email" flavour, is still up.

Do you see "Outlook.com" or "Outlook Emall" as the banner when you log into Outlook.com Webmail. Do you & your wife see the same banner or not? That may be the difference.
