Kelly Group/Communications (Help/Advice please)

[link to this post]

Hey guys and gals,

I have a 10 working day course tomorrow at St Helens with Kelly Group
/Communications. I got into electrical wiring as a panel wireman. But recently I was let go, but I really loved that type of work and I felt trying to become a Trainee Engineer for BT Openreach would be the perfect job for me. I applied for BT Openreach directly but am still waiting for a response after Ive just done my video interview but I also applied for Kelly. Kelly got back straight away and wanted me to go on the course but Im just wondering if anyone works/worked for Kelly and what was your experience like ? Ive never been self employed that worries me as I have a misses and son to support? But yeah I was just wondering what everyones experiences was like. Ideally Id wait for BT to come back but money needs to start coming in ASAP. So if anyone could get back to me I would appreciate it! Thank you!

Its a completely different job to Openreach as you wont be doing repairs.

I would greatly encourage you to go for Openreach. If they offer you a job then absolutely take it, and leave Kellys for Openreach. You would be self employed with Kellys, no sick pay, no holiday entitlement and no pension.

Openreach you get a BT pension, other employee benefits, sick pay, holiday pay etc and a FAR more rewarding job.

Thats all I can say as Ive never worked for Kellys.

I think you already have your answer (with your comment above).

BT is a far better company than Kelly's (no one has a good word to say about them) but you don't currently have a job offer from BT so either take the Kelly's job or find something else.

Agreed-take the Kellys job but continue pursuing Openreach with a view to quitting Kellys once you start Openreach if you get the job.

I speak to a lot of Kellys and Quinns installers and theres a lot of propaganda from their management about Openreach, presumably so they dont leave! Dont believe a word of it. Once you get into Openreach you can apply for any job internally in BT Group, some of those jobs pay (IMO) a heck of a lot.

Also-your starting salary might not look amazing with Openreach but your basic pay can be if you volunteer for more training. Ask you can do as much overtime as you want, and go home when your finish time comes. Something you cant do in Kellys (or you dont get paid if you havent finished the job youre on).

Its a real shame companies act like this rather than improve their own standards of employment.

Be aware you are likely to be billed for your 'training' if you leave Kelly within a year.

Blimey, what an awful company. Id be tempted to just ignore that though, I cant see it standing up in court.

The charging for training if the employment is left is common in the transport industry. If your training is funded while you get your LGV or PSV licence then it is very unusual if it is not reclaimed if you leave within 12 months of finishing your training.
