Slow bb

[link to this post]

Hi...living in Co. Armagh and using EE as a service provider since last March.
Estimated speed should be between 10 and 15 mpbs, guaranteed speed should be 8.5. For the last 3 months or so my speed is intermittently getting worse and dropping to 1 or less. If I reset the router or unplug and replug the cable it might go back to 13mpbs and last for a few minutes before dropping again. (Getting these results on google Speedtest ... I tried think broadband speed test and I always get over 13mpbs?)

I’ve had 3 or 4 openreach engineers out to check the line and the exchange cabinet and they all say it’s fine. EE have replaced the router 3 times but it’s still the same.

Anyone got any suggestions on what to do next?

I am hoping EE will release me from my contract but l’m worried I’ll have the same trouble with another provider

Is actual use of the connection reflecting the big drop in speed too?

Looking at the speed tests can see the 13 Mbps but you also have the odd one like

https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/16058179015... which starts good, and then looks like it stalls.

Of note is that you are using WiFi - best to turn off the wifi and test with an Ethernet cable, as issue could well be wireless related rather than your broadband connection.

Have you logged into your router to check if the connection speed of the ADSL (called sync speed) is steady or varying a lot.

Another possibility is that you have something that is periodically trying to lots of upload data, and when you turn off router whatever was uploading goes to sleep for sometime.

Thanks for your reply.

the tests done toady were using Ethernet ...first test is typical of the problem I'm encountering!

Downstream sync speed seems stable at 16.56Mbps

The first test - note the massive latency.

Have delved to see what the latency was like, and when the test page was sitting there doing nothing the latency was still 700 to 1000ms i.e. very bad
It also did not change during the download and upload.

This is why I suspect you might have something else using your connection particularly the upload, rather than a problem with the ADSL2+ part itself.

The next test two minutes later http://tbb.st/1605890280590491855
Reported latency is much better around 30ms and throughput graphs look nicer too as well as hitting the numbers you'd expect

Did you switch off the WiFi on the router, and only have the 1 device connected and are certain it was downloading and uploading anything e.g. app or OS updates, or things like an iCloud backup.

I didn’t switch off the WiFi (not sure how to do it.. i’ll Give it a try tomorrow).

As I mentioned before, EE have given me 3 different routers. With one of theses routers I only had 2 devices connected to the router...my Samsung phone and an IPad and the problem was still happening.

I might try disconnecting these devices tonight and see how it goes

The tests do look better overall

http://tbb.st/1605902337346325055 had a period of high latency but not horribly

Once latency in normal range http://tbb.st/1605902447488043855 then all looks great.

Time to run a long period of pings to a stable host and see if there is a lot of variation and or packet loss.
