got a VPN

[link to this post]

I decided to get aVPN, so I have gone for NORD, but I am surprised at home much it can slow things down, I thought NORD was one of the better ones. I got an offer from work for it, and i have been thinking of getting one for a while,

A bit of a pain to set up.

I have Norton 360 hanging around on a couple of devices. Its included VPN only single streams so I ditched it. I only tried it out of interest, not specific needs.

Is NORD doing the same? Even loading a BBC page on single stream was a PITA.

Connections: OnePlus 8 Pro on Three 4+ (LTE)/5G and at home Three Mobile, with (Three)ZTE MF286D router giving about 113/20Mbps.

Been a long time since I was on Windows, but your issue might be OpenVPN rather than Nord itself. Check in your settings if you have the option to switch to Wireguard (Nord call it "Nordlynx" in their literature so check for that too).

Agreed, if OpenVPN in TCP mode it is easy to get through firewalls but can be a pain for multi streams. Wireguard is automatic using the Nord application though.

It is fine now, maybe it was sorting itself out on my computer, even changing to a server in another country it is pretty rapid.
Thanks for the reply.

open VPN is a free VPN service, not sure what Nord have to do with that, working fine now anyway, but thanks for the reply.

i thought with all that is going on, maybe it would be nice to have a bit more protection, £74 for 2 years, that is ok.

First post you mentioned "at home". Are you using a VPN from home? Why would you do that? What protection are you expecting?

OpenVPN also provide a VPN protocol that most commercial VPN providers (including Nord) use. Glad you got it sorted out anyway.

I use mullvad with wireguard and it keeps up with my gigabit connection reasonably well.

I recently joined NordVPN and at first the speeds were impressive over their own NordLynx protocol. Soon enough the speeds dropped by over 50% and connection started to lag. Contacted Nord support and was advised to try IKEv2 protocol. Speeds and response times are great again. Give IKEv2 a try.

I looked up this protocol thing and I understand now what you are all on about smile
I expected them to have their own servers and that sort of thing.

The only ones i see is Nordlynx and openVPN on the protocols for some reason, but as I said above, it is working fine now, apart from a couple of sites saying I am not in the U.K, even if I am using a UK server, which is strange, but that was on the mobile this morning, not on the computer.

speedwise, even if I change to another country it seems ok,. Sure not as nippy as if it was in this country, but to be honest, I am still amazed even after all these years on the net, how fast the data can get from say the USA and back to me again, it is crazy, We can do this sort of thing in the world, just think what amazing things we could do if the whole world worked together instead of trying to blow each other up

Yes, Nord (and the others) have their own servers. OpenVPN or Wireguard are optional ways to communicate from your machine to the Nord servers. Nord customised Wireguard and call it NordLynx which means you can't use it from a router with built in Wireguard support.

What sort of protection are you expecting NordVPN to give you?

For a start it will make it encrypt my connection, so even my ISP should not be able to see it, also protect my phone if I am out on a public network. Nord also have threat protection. The other thing is I can use it to access sites in other countries that are different when accessed in the u.K,

It is just another layer of protection at the end of the day and for two years it is cheap.
