line speeds drop

[link to this post]

Hi
had bt upgrade my standard 1mb connection to max 8mb package

first couple of months where great
getting download speeds between 2400 and 3600
uploads where steady at 448

all of sudden i'm getting 1000 and less downstream
and 64 upstream

latest numbers from my netgear dg834g are

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1472 kbps 96 kbps
Line Attenuation 55 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 14 db 6 db

anyone tell me why the sudden drop after a very steady 2 months, nothing changed at home side and tried a reboot but not much change

thanks

Tried it in the 'test' socket inside your BT master?
Is the voice side OK (no crackles etc.)?
Were you always on a 15db noise margin, or has that increased (could explain the drop in DS sync)?

Line Attenuation 55 db no change (downstream)
Line Attenuation 5.5 db changed was 25db (upstream)

line noise for downstream used to sit between 0 and 5
line noise for upsteam used to sit at 14

Line attenuation wouldn't normally drop by 19.5db (in any case, a lower attenuation should be a good thing) - could be a router firmware bug, or a failing router.

If the DS noise margin used to be 0-5db (implying a target of 6db), but now, even after reboots, it's at 14db (implying a target of 15db), it looks like BT's monitoring systems have reacted to multiple re-syncs by increasing your target to 15db (lowering the DS speed, and increasing stability).

Can't explain the US though.

It might be worth plugging into the 'test' socket inside your BT master (to isolate all internal wiring), and maybe borrowing a router to see if yours is failing.

Even so, it's still worth removing it and going directly onto the 'test' socket (just to eliminate any wiring faults, or a dodgy filter).

also with another netgear dg834 (v2)

Connection Speed 1920 kbps 64 kbps
Line Attenuation 56 db 15.5 db

OK.
I would definately say your new 15db noise margin target is causing most (if not all) of the DS connection speed drop.
Having a 15db target, instead of the default 6db, could result in as much as a 2Mbps drop in connection speed (although more likely to be around 1500kbps).
As for what's causing the very low US connection speed, God only knows.

At least you've now eliminated as much as you can.
It's still possible a dodgy set of Christmas lights (or maybe even a heating boiler) are sending masses of cr-p down the mains (or even airbourne).
If it still does it in the early hours of the morning, when you and your neighbours have no Xmas lights on the go, and your heating is off, there's nothing more you can do.
Just report it to your ISP - highlighting the 64kbps upstream as evidence of a line or equipment fault (even the most rubbish of lines, with your attenuation, can sync at 448kbps upstream).
