ADSL Checker spped reduction

Hi,

I'm moving to a new house and have been checking the adsl speed as per BT Wholesale's website. Initially it was a 2Mb, it then dropped to 1Mb about a week ago and today I checked again and it's reduced to 0.5Mb.

What's going on? The current owner has told me that the have a 2Mb BT Broadband account, but it looks like i'll be stuck with 0.5Mb

Can you ask the current owners stats for their stats and then post on this site? Would have thought they would be willing to provide for a smooth house sale

if they have 2M then you'll get 2M or maybe more with a MaxDSL package.

The line checker is an estimator, it doesn't define what speed you will get from many ISPs, though some choose to believe it and restrict the package they will put you on.

I posted a mildly (because you are a newbie) rude reply suggesting you read the OP again. After I posted, I returned automatically to your post and it referred to the current owners.

I thought I was going mad!!! , and did a quick "Delete".

Then I read the edit note, and replaced the delete with this.

Don't do that! My nerves won't stand it.

Anyway, yes, a good idea for the OP to do that. But yarwell's answer is also right, the physical line and connection at the exchange will be the same.

I agree, Yarwell is right, I was more thinking in case the current owners were not being completely honest about the BB connection they were enjoying - gettting the stats would conclusively prove the speed, as well as setting the OP's mind at rest.

Another good check the OP could do is use the postcode checker alongside the phone number checker, an individual numbers record in the line speed checker could show as having poor line speed, but this is updated line details over time and can therefore be affected by internal wiring or external line faults. The postcode checker would give a more overall view of average speed in the street.

Would generally use the two in conjunction and take an average value (internal faults could be fixed, the OP may be stuck if the external wiring is causing the poor speed as his MSR would be set at that value, and no degradation in voice quality would mean he is stuck at that speed)
