contacting the exchange

[link to this post]

hi not sure if this is in the right place apologies if it isn't. To cut a long story short ive been trying to get broadband but have been unsuccessful due to tags being on my line for two months at least, when these were finally taken off i was told by bt that i wouldn't be able to get broadband with anyone for 4-8 weeks as there was work going on at my exchange (chorley)
This week after looking on the be there website and it saying that i could register with them, and also seeing an online article from a local newspaper saying that someone had finally been connected on bt broadband after waiting for 5 months. i assumed that everything was now sorted. But i just wanted to check that this was the case before i got my hopes up and then be told i'd have to wait further. I contacted bt through the tag hotline (couldn't see any other relevant contact number) and was told my tags were clear but they could'nt tell me any infomation about the exchange.
So could anyone please help me to find out if the work has been completed at the chorley (lancashire) exchange. An email address or a phone number
Thank you

Every exchange has working going on at it almost all the time, so interesting to know what exactly was meant.

O2/Be will be available from tomorrow suppossedly, Tiscali LLU services since earlier this year. AOL also.

Which bit of BT said you cannot get broadband currently? It would have been worthing trying other providers than taking a sales person word, which can be wrong.

sorry my mistake that was a bit vague,
i signed up with tiscali on the 512 package a few years ago, then they upped most people to either 1mb or 2mb i can't quite remember but they were'nt able to do so with me. Earlier on this year i was getting really slow speeds 12-14mbps on the tiscali speed checker. They tried to sort this out but i still was'nt happy with the speeds so i decided to cancel and look for another isp. had to wait 30 days for my service to end with tiscali and in those 30 days the speeds got up to near 512 pretty much all the time and i was happy with this, but stupidly i forgot to tell them i wanted to carry on with them.
When the 30 days was up and i was disconnected i rang them and said i was happy with the speeds and would like to continue with them. They said i could but it would be a new 12 mth contract and they did'nt offer the same package, i did'nt mind. I had to wait for my tags to be lifted but for some reason they were'nt lifted for 8 weeks. i then rang tiscali and tried to order but they told me they could'nt offer me anything because the quality would'nt be good enough.
I rang bt to see if they could do anything and they said they would'nt advise ordering with them or anybody because they were building another exchange in chorley (forgot about that sorry)
All my contact with bt was through the tags department

More complex but someone has feed you bull I think.

No info on a new exchange in the Chorley area at all. Sounds like you have a long line and BT Retail was doing its usual we dont supply Max (up to 8Mbps) on long lines.

Moral - try a provider that is not Tiscali or BT.

It is probable Be will say you are too far from the exchange, but if you put your number into their website checker you will find out. (Note Andrew said they are only enabling it tomorrow). If you can get them, Be Value is the one to go for on that line.

That was the package i was looking for, it says that it is available in my area on the site, of the providers i have been looking at ive been looking at the packages of speeds of 1mb or 2mb that are unlimited (i know very few are) because ive been told by tiscali and bt that i won't get speeds over 512 where i live. So ive always thought it was pointless looking at 8mb and above. I do download a few films and the like, not a massive amount because it's been so slow really. That taken into account ive not really wanted to pay anymore than 15-20pm if im not getting the value from it.
could you possibly show me a site where i could put my location in and it would confirm the speeds i could expect.

use the number checker at http://www.btwholesale.com/getbroadband

it gives you two values, the fixed speed product (0.5, 1, 2M) and an estimate of the MaxDSL speed. If you cut & paste the whole thing (minus your phone number) it may be simplest.

The Be speed may be higher than the Max speed esp if the latter is over 4M.

Why? That shows you may be able to get more than 3 Mbps on Max.
