Lousy dynamic IP, disconnect or pull plug?

[link to this post]

Rab,

Anytime I seem to get a poor thruput IP address I sometimes pull the filter plug in frustration. That is, the flying matchbox lead from the main socket handy to my desk. After a few mins I plug back in, see the sync light flicker and steady, then I reconnect in software. At most I've done 2 or 3 in an hour.

Is that alright or should I really disconnect in software?

You would be better off by disconnecting using software or by powering down your router (which causes a dying gasp signal to be sent). In both those cases the other end knows it is an intentional act on your part, not just the result of noise breaking the connection.

In practice it is only likely to be a problem if you break the connection more than 10 times in an hour.
