A couple of spedtests

[link to this post]

Something odd here. This site's speedtest result this evening -

Downstream Upstream
01/11/07 19:35 112.13 Kbps 101.20 Kbps

Then, 5 mins later from the bt speedtester -

01/11/2007
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 3000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 3968 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2653 kbps

Is something wrong somewhere?

And our speedtest again?

It could traffic management from the ISP, tried the port 80 option on our tester?

Again -

Downstream /Upstream
01/11/07 20:36 1091.88 Kbps /371.47 Kbps

This was via 8095 - just a little lower via port 80. Much closer!

the BT speedtester sits on BTs network and as a BT ISP user you probably have preferential routing to that compared to something elsewhere on the internet.

Ah - they may give me preferential routing but definitely not preferential action!!

Youre correct...

Once you come off one of their Network you get hit by "shaping".
Ive repeatedly seen speeds of anywhere between 1.2 - 2Mbps on external speedtesters, but can record 6800kbps on the BTw performance tester.

I can then swap the login on the same line and get near 7Mbps on a PlusNet connection. (SSB 2 realms).

Testing seems to show that the amount of throttling can also depend on which PoP you hop on/off Colossus to the peer-point at so obviously indicating that the amount of "shaping" can depend on location.
Ilford --> Telehouse seems to be worst for me.. possibly Telehouse being one of the busiest for forward transit/peering on to the internet?

Shaping is in inverted commas - because Im not sure if thats the correct term....
ie getting only get 1200 kbps on http traffic - yet being able to open up more nntp threads to increase your speed isnt exactly what I'd call QoS. *

*Not sure if this situation is still correct since Ive not been around much the past few weeks.

Yup, that was exactly what I was seeing when I was on BTB. Once they introduced the 'shaping', nntp / (odd) ftp downloads would fly, anything http was reduced to a crawl., at one point it was reduced to dial speeds on http (5KB/s).

As you can see by the signature I upped and left BT for another provider, and have no speed problems 99.9% of the time here.

Reading various other online forums, it does seem that BT have a bit more of a grasp on the 'shaping' tool, as users seem to report being slowed to a more reasonable 1.5Mb / 2.Mb at times.
