UPDATE on Broadband connection - DROPPING

[link to this post]

Since I was last on here;

The BT broadband was working great for about 2 weeks, no problems, the speed fluctuated a bit but it was fine.

Then this week I have had the same old problem reappear, where I try to connect to a web page and it times out. The next day the broadband would start working fine again then the day after it would time out, this has happened on and off for the last week.

According to BT broadband they have described it as the 'connection drops'. This happens intermittently. LASt night they told me to turn off the router for 6 hours while they did something called a 'session kill' then try again. I turned it on this am and it was working fine for 20 mins then it dropped again.

I have now been told to try another router, fortunately I have a spare one from a year ago which is unused.

Is the dropping of connections a common thing? And what is the solution?

Conventionally you would look at router logs to see what was happening, does the ADSL signal go down or the PPP session, etc.

The DSL light on the router is on and appears normal when this problems occurs. I dont know what the PPP Session is? And how do I look at my router logs?

Do you have a"Router Manager" icon on your desktop? If so, click on it to get a display of what the router has been doing, If not, get the same information from an entry under "BT Broadband 220V --> Router Manager" in your start menu.

If you come back with some information from the router logs/stats, I'm sure one or more of the experts on here will be able to help.

ScreamingAbdabs here, cant seem to log into the forum.

Have been visited the BT engineer this week who basically has said that he thinks its a problem at the DSLAM (Local exchange), however the line from my house to the exchange is fine, there are no problems. Its the line from the exchange to the www thats the problem however he cannot do anything about it, thats a specialist team job apparently. He connected his laptop to my BT master socket and got the same problem as me. Pages time out all the time - internet explorer cant display the webpage.

This was an intermittent problem now it is like this all the time. THis has been going on for 6 weeks! And im getting increasingly frustrated with BT's call centre and their pathetic troubleshooting ideas. BT Engineering dept are still currently working on it, but I have no confidence in there all the time.

Hello, screaming abdabs again, heres an update to my problem.

Got a call from BT on the 22nd Dec and the broadband had started working again, BT said they had done some work at the local exchange ( i dont think they had physically done work, just from there end, wherever that is!) and the broadband seemed to be working fine over the holiday period, however in the last couple of days, its starting to reappear. I now seem to get my homepage up most times when logging in, but from there on in the connection has the old problem, the loading page creeps along very slowly not displaying anything. I close this try again and it then may work, for a couple of pages then the problem occurs again. Its not a speed problem as the speed test on this site shows 1.6MBPS which is pretty normal for mine as im in the sticks.

Its almost as if there's a blockage on the line from the exchange to the www. But its intermittent. Its very annoying and frustrating and i really am dreading ringing BT up again!!

Anyone else having these problems. When the problem occurs the message displayed at the bottom is 'website found...waiting for reply' etc and the loading bar creeps along very slowly like an old snail!
