Switching to wireless...

[link to this post]

Hello everyone,

First up, i'm sorry if i'm posting this in the wrong forum. I've checked the other forums and this one seems the best.

Anyway, i'm thinking of getting a wireless system set up in my house, mainly so i can use my DS Lite online anywhere in the house without having to have my computer on. I'm with Orange broadband and i'm pretty much confused as to what hardware i would need to get a wireless system up and working with a DS Lite, since i've heard that not all routers are compatible with it.

Please treat me as a complete newbie to this, so as much help from anyone and everyone would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Lloyd

Any wireless ADSL/router should work. Plug the router into the telephone socket and plug the computer into the router. Use this wired connection to turn on the the wireless feature in the router and set up the wireless security. I think the DS Lite is unfortunately limited to the weaker WEP encryption but, hey, it is better than nothing.

You do not say what you use to connect to the internet at the moment but whatever it is will not be needed once you have the router. All you need to do is enter the Orange login id and password into the router's config pages.

There is a Gaming Forum on here where you may get more specific help from gamers:-

Interesting.... I would have thought that the OP, being with Orange, would have a Livebox router which has wireless built in.

Thank you for your replies.

gomezz: Would I be able to use the DS Lite with my computer turned off? That's an important consideration for me. I've been browsing Amazon for Buffalo routers (i believe that they supply wireless technology to Nintendo, so i imagine that compatibility would be fine) and i've found several different models. Would any/all of them be compatible with Orange? http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_w_h_?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Buffalo+router It's a broad question, but i'm not sure about DSL and ADSL and what would work with which.

scousetechie: I've been with Orange for several years (since it was Freeserve) and the router/modem/thing that connects between my phoneline and computer is a few years old. I guess they have a new design now, but that's not what i got with the package originally.

Thank you very much,

Lloyd

Thank you for your reply.

A 'speedtouch ADSL filter' connects to my phone line socket in the wall. That connects to a speedtouch 330 ADSL thing which has 'Thomson' on the back. This connects to the USB port on my computer. Does this make sense?

Thanks again.

you have a USB modem.

you could ask Orange for a Livebox. Or you could buy a wireless ADSL modem/router

should be, I haven't actually connected a "DS Lite" to anything but Google will find you someone that has.
