Uk online max speed problem

[link to this post]

Hi everyone im hoping you can help me out.

I upgraded from 2mb to 8mb around 3 months ago.

About 2 weeks into it i was experiencing connection problems and had to reboot alo but whilst it was up and running i was receiving the full 8mb speeds.

Then my connection automatically went back to 2mb.

I haven't been bothered about it until now , when i wanted to play an online game but my upload speed was 64kbs ( around 7-8kb/s i think). And download is the usual 2000kbs for a 2mb connection.

I contacted ukonline and they said it was a router problem or wiring so i had a mess around but to no avail.

Finally they told me to use the bt speed tester from the TEST socket.

it said my LINE WAS SET TO 2MB and i received my usual low speeds.

Now i've explained this to you has anybody experienced this problem before and whose fault is it?

Mine ( router) or Ukonline ( setting my connection back to 2mb) or BT ( problem with the exchange)

Any help is greatly appreciated thanx in advance!

What did it say the sync speed, (connection speed), was. Not the download speed.

If you connect into your usual socket, (is that the front of the master socket or an extension?), what sync speed then? And what is the upload sync as well? Your router tells you those, you don't need the BT speed test.

Which version of DG834G do you have?

The fact the upstream is so low suggests something is odd, very likely to be something like a Sky box does not have a filter on its phone connection, or other device is plugged in without a filter.

One assumes the telephone line is working for normal voice calls in a reasonable way?

Checking from the test socket as suggested is worth doing, speedtests wont improve immediately, but the DSL connection rate which you can also see by loggging into the routers web interface should improve.

Looks like you do have a wiring, equipment or line problem as your ISP said, except you don't report them as suggesting the line.

First follow up John2007's post .

The sync of 2880 would after several days give you a profile of 2.5Mbps rather than the 2Mbps the speed test reported. But the modem stats of 2656 sync would only give you the 2Mbps you have. So presumably the 2880 was a lucky high speed.

The upstream connection rate of 96 and then 64kbps is very low. While you have the master socket open try plugging the filter direct into it and see what the stats are then compared to what they are however you normally connect. See John's post. (Preferably taken before you make any alterations).

Have you recently got anything new electronic or electrical in the house? Sky box, phone-connected burglar alarm? Fitted a new phone extension?

Did you happen to get disconnected during a thunderstorm a few weeks ago? That could have blown one or all filters. So try using a completely unused one if you have one.

Whenever you change anything, get the stats as soon as you have sync'ed as the SNRM, (Noise Margin), will vary afterwards. Checking the SNRM every few hours is also useful to see how much it varies, especially between broad daylight and nights.
