DACS

[link to this post]

Hi
My parents have a 'DACS2' box inside their house, which was installed when they needed a second phone line (this second line was disconnected several years ago now, but the box is still there).
They currently have dial-up internet (and only get 26k download speed...)
I believe that broadband will not work with the DACS box there?
1) Do they have to get BT to remove the DACS2 box? If so, how much does it cost?
2) Do any broadband providers take care of the removal of the DACS2 box if you join up with them? If so, do they do it for free?

Many thanks.
Phil.

Procedure is order broadband and the ordering process will flag the need for a DACS removal and a visit should then be arranged.

DACS removal is free, but some providers cannot be bothered with the acting as an intermediary and reject the order immediately, without referring it onto BT

In other words the DACS removal process should be transparent to the ISP, they just place the broadband order and Openreach sort out the DACS. In this case they will likely need to contact the end user as the DACS is internal, but a de-DACS usually only adds a small delay.

Well thats how it should work, but sometimes the order will reject because it has a DACS on the line, then we have to put it through again with some notes, but as a rule nowadays it is picked up and dealt with in the background, especialy as it is in the house, and no longer serving any use, rather than it being up a pole or something like that.

It doesn't matter if it's up a pole down a hole or in the house... the proceedure is just the same. Actually being in the house is the hardest to deal with because the Openreach engiineer will have to gain access to the property to remove the unit.

In reply to:

and no longer serving any use,

cough, cough I think you'll find thats a single channel working DACS, the OP reports the duff dial-up speed. It *should* be a tickle for someone, as, if they have ceased the second line, it'll be a quick re termination to disconnect the remote unit, and a swift jumper rearrangement in the exchange.
