quiet line

[link to this post]

does anyone know what causes a line to go quiet? as recentley people have been having trouble hearing me on the phone. ironically the SNR in my router has dropped by about 5Db and the attenuation as increased by 2Db.

thanks

Maybe it's just a rubbish phone (I've just changed a load of Binatone DECT phones for this very reason).

Has your connection speed changed (if the margin has dropped by around 5dB, it could either be due to BTs DLM putting you on a lower target margin, or you router has connected at a higher speed - resulting in a lower margin during the evening & overnight).

I know this sounds irrelevant, but is your ISP Tiscali/Pipex/Nildram?

plug a phone into the test socket inside the nte5, behind the faceplate and try the phone from there with everything else disconected. If possible try another phone

What was the result, still quiet? If so then report a fault to your phone service provider. Anything else you have tried?

OK so as I understand the issue -

"Trouble hearing me on the phone. Ironically the SNR in my router has dropped by about 5Db and
the attenuation as increased by 2Db".

SNR is the ratio of clear Signal in relation to Noise, if it has dropped
then to me that would tend to be about
what I would expect.

Attenuation and SNR can fluctuate a small amount and that could easily be as a result of physical problems
with the line.

Generally a full install is best and they are far less likely to fail.

I have always said that in the event that there is a
phone issue that you can actually hear, then it is really a good idea
to call that up and report it - I usually focus on reporting the phone fault, not the DSL
fault, as most Telcos set much higher standards for PSTN (Phone services) than for DSL,
as there is a huge range of issues that can happen with DSL, and PSTN is much simpler
to fix, so the "Fobinator scripts" are brought out (eg Oh that must be your modem /
problem etc).

You might find punching your figures into my tool helps (here www.adslgeek.com
though it is in development at the moment, and might have some probs. As you had
said that your SNR had dropped by 5dB that might be irrelevant unless you were
right near the end of range.

Was the DSL speed impacted (I would expect that) or was there any other symptoms?

Hope this helps..
