Weird downloading issue

[link to this post]

Just moved to talktalk, when downloading from usenet, my connection keeps stalling for a few seconds then picking back up again...

You can see it there, any ideas what this could be?

TalkTalk 24MB ADS2+
Downstream: 17955 kbps 22.5dB Loss 6.4dB SNR
Upstream:1019 kbps 11.6dB Loss 9.8dB SNR

Whose usenet server are you using?

It may be it has a maximum number of users and it is dropping you, or you are seeing an effect of talk talk traffic management

happens on newshosting and on giganews.

would the traffic management stall the connection, then let it go back to full speed again? seems weird.

when it stalls, webpages won't load either.

Ive not read anywhere about newsgroups being throttled

Wouldn't expect a total connection stall, are you perhaps using lots of multiple threads to download, you may be overloading the NAT table in the router

I see a similar pattern with UKOnline's IPStream in the evening. It'll bounce between nothing (or next to nothing) and ~100kbyte constantly every second or so.

I know some ISP's put a lower priority on certain traffic, for instance Newsgroups, Bit Torrent and P2P. You can check if Bit torrent is being slowed down by your ISP by running some tests on this website. More tools to come.
