HI
Wonder if you can help at all
Cut a long story short, had double glazing installed and they accidently ripped out the BT socket, where the phone/modem lead goes..... they repaired it themselves as such.... but it needed to be replaced, as it was virtually hanging by a thread. The internet connection overall was ok after this happened ... about 2 weeks or so ago. The BT engineer came yesterday fitted a new socket and since then my connection has been really bad and limited. Phoned orange my ISP all ok there end. I have a Belkin modem /wireless . Out of the one Bt socket, comes a filter which then has the lead to the Belkin and one for the phone. Now the Belkin usually has the TELEPHONE light symbol being green all the time ( before yesterday), now its sometimes not even on....and if Im lucky it will flash/then go green then maybe then then last light with turn green (THE WORLD symbol)
Ive changed the modem wire, seen if it was that... no change. I phoned Belkin they said it may need a new filter
However it seems VERY odd that after the bloke came, my connection has gone haywire
Anybody have any suggestions why this has happened... or what I can do to resolve this
I may not be online till tomorrow depends on my connection. Any help appreciated
Ps Im not super technical by the way
Thanks

Do you have any other extension wiring that is hard wired from the master socket?
Does the new socket have a BT or Openreach logo embossed on it?

Your master socket should come apart like this, and you can test the ADSL modem in the test socket that is revealed.
If stable there it points to some other issue, e.g. the extension wiring in the property.
Your belkin router should have a status page, you need to find this and see what information it has relating to the line state. Poor response from provider as if you are going off and online they should be able to see this

Thanks Looks normal, but as there's nothing to compare against before you had your problems, it's hard to say if it's normal for you.
Try it again next time you're accidentally offline - at least you'll be able to compare it.

No something odd there, are the figures the same if you switch off and back on (the router that is)
If so then it looks like the speed drop may be due to Orange placing you on a fixed 2Meg speed profile, i.e. nothign wrong with the wiring.
http://www.farina1.com/adsl estimates a connection speed of 7312Kbps is possible if the modem was allowed to sync at the higher speeds.

sounds like the lead-in (cable from a outside block or pole into your house) has been damaged when the double glazing was put in.If so this will need to be renewed and you may well get a TRC for this work ie you will get a bill ! This is because someone working for you as damaged the BT cable. You may not get a TRC if the lead in was very old or wrong sort of cable.
This does happed a lot.

Did the BT engineer fit exactly the same type of socket as the old one or is it slightly different?
