sigh... bt line got activated but...

[link to this post]

So I have done a ton of research about broadband, fup's, download speeds etc and I finally decided to go with ukonline since I am in a LLU enabled area under samknows with ADSL+2 and can go with the UKonline premier package.

Anyway, I paid to have the bt line in my house activated (hasn't been used since I moved in 5 years ago) with the sole use of just using it for the internet. I have since gone onto the bt broadband site to estimate what likely speed I would get if I joined with them and they say 256kb per second maximum!! What the hell... why so slow.

"For Telephone Number 01702XXXXXX on Exchange MARINE
We've just tested your line and can confirm your line supports the UK's most complete broadband package, BT Total Broadband. We estimate your maximum download speed to be 256 Kbps (Kilobits per second)."

As opposed to my next door neighbour's phone number who gets

"For Telephone Number 017026XXXXX on Exchange MARINE
We've just tested your line and can confirm your line supports the UK's most complete broadband package, BT Total Broadband. We estimate your maximum download speed to be 6.0 Mbps (Megabits per second)."

So I am worried but go over to the ukonline site anyway and put my new phone number in there and get told my max speed would be 4mbs.

On sam knows it states 16mb and I am only 1003m away from the LLU enabled exchange.

So given that my bt speed is so far off from my next door neighbour and also the ukonline estimate is way out I'm wondering what is going on?? Have bt given me a cheap line or something??

I spent £125 just to get connected and now I am paying 12 months line rental and I have a rubbish phone line when I thought I would get a good one for my internet after my extensive weeks worth of research!! I phoned bt and got nowhere!

new activations can take upto 48 hours to register correctly on the availability checker.
In the meantime they usually give a result similar to yours.

Oh god I hope so!! I need this internet for work because I work at home!

I will be so unbelievably gutted if after all my careful research on here to avoid getting shafted by the internet companies it happens AGAIN.
