FTTC Speeds

[link to this post]

Forgive me if this has already been asked but does anybody have any info. on likely speeds?

There is a green box outside my house but I'm not sure if this is Virgin or BT (even though I can't get Virgin! Don't ask!) so was wondering if there is a website that gives you likely speeds based on the distance between your house and your local street cabinet? Too complex to produce?

Not yet, wait for more real world data to be released.
Does the box have a number on it? Virgin boxes are normally 4 digit.
If your covered by google street view, let you know your street name and we can take a look smile

downstream speed is "up to 40M" rate adaptive. Connection not available if likely speed below 15M, as I understand it. Upstream up to 2M, with 5M (and faster) to follow as options.

Downstream uncontended throughput of 20M or line rate if lower.

Thanks.

Just checked and I'm not available on streetview.

Will take a closer look at the box and post back.

2 plusnet customers who were sub 6mbit now get over 20mbit on fttc.

is there a reason openreach wont connect when speed below 40% on fttc but have no issue with it on adsl?

if you correct then someone eg. could have 1mbit on adsl max, would get 10mbit on fttc, 10 fold improvement but would not get connected for been below 15mbit?

I imagine there is a reason for the 15M minimum, but I don't know what it is.

I think part of the trials is to test sub 15M customers on a best efforts basis, maybe VDSL2 is unstable at low speeds ? or perhaps its an ANFP crosstalk issue or something bearing in mind that cabinet based VDSL will sit next to exchange based ADSL/2/2+

Qwest offer "7 Mbps, 12 Mbps or 20 Mbps" with VDSL2 so it prob isn't the technology itself.

I'll fill in the gaps.

Below 15Meg connection speed (not throughput) is to be considered a fault on the VDSL2 FTTC service, and they'll work on the line from cabinet to home.
