What connection speed should I expect?

[link to this post]

I am using BT Total Broadband Option 1 with the Home Hub 2.0 as supplied which indicates that my download speed is 8128 Kbps.
I am using Windows Vista Home Premium.
The Noise Margin in 10.4 dB/ 23.0 dB.

I have run several speed tests at various times of the day using speedtester.bt.com and the results show
DSL Connection Rate 8128 Kbps download and 448 Kbps upload
IP Profile for the line is 7150 Kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during test varies from 708 to 1120Kbps

I have spoken to BT Broadband Help and they say there is nothing that can be done as it is probably my internal wiring or my computer. Although my BT Master Socket is under the floor, i have managed to connect directly to the test socket behind the lower front cover and get the same results. I have also used a laptop running XP also through an ethernet connection and received similar results.

Any advice?

The problem is not with your wiring or that would effect your sync speed not throughput!
Are you connected to the router with a cat 5 lead or wireless?

I suggest you put a copy of your opening post in the BT Broadband forum, and a post in this thread asking for any further replies to be to the one on there. Include a link to it, and change the subject here to something like "Further replies to ..." with the rest of it in the body as just described. (Duplicate posting is frowned on and doing that would solve the difficulty).

There are a few BT Reps visit there and often pick up the problem, so you probably stand more chance of a solution.

If you have never been there I think you will be a little surprised.

I am new to forums and don't understand the link and duplicate posting part of your reply.

Ummm ... thinks smile.

(We all were once so don't worry).

I assume you understood why I suggested the other forum, and did you recognise the name of it as a normal link like you get in web sites?

So I'm suggesting you put a post in there asking about your download speed, because vivaciti has helped you see there is nothing wrong with your connection. It is actually the highest possible on your service. What is wrong is the download speed you are getting.

So copy the contents of the opening post you did here and put that in the new post in that forum.

Once you have posted it, when you read it you will see [link to this post] under your name in the header. Right click that and click Copy Shortcut.

Then come back here and reply to your first post here. But in the Subject alter it to:-
Any more replies to ...

Then in the actual post say:-
my new thread in

then on the next line paste the shortcut you just copied.

There is a fancier way of doing it but let's start with the basics smile.

A bit complicated the first time! Second time it's easy.

That's brilliant Bob smile. Spot on.

The thing is most of the people in that forum are on BT and many of them might not come here, so someone knowing the answer might not have seen the question here.

And you've also avoided upsetting anyone by cross-posting, (which isn't normally allowed). There is nothing more annoying than taking a few minutes to help then finding the same answer already posted to another identical thread.

So although I can't help with the question I wish you luck. Welcome to the site smile.

Hi Bobf311,

It does look like your throughput is a bit on the slow side. I have copied a link on below to our self help guide and this will help us rule out any possible causes in your property. I would also recommend you run as many speed tests as you can using http://speedtester.bt.com. Run as many of these tests as you can (using the test socket) in the next 24 hours at different times of the day. If the self help guide does not work PM me your BT account details and I will check the network side of thing. The link to the self help guide is:

http://bt.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/bt.cfg/php/enduser/cc...

Thanks

David

BT Support,
The above post has been made by an ISP REPRESENTATIVE (although not necessarily the ISP being discussed in the post).
