wireless connection-new aerial

[link to this post]

Hi I thought I would share this problem with you. I have a DG834gt router and I use the wireless connection to connect my computer ( XP sp3) and an xbox to the internet. My wireless signal is good to my computer about 60% on the display. The XBox is not so good-40%-50%, so I thought I would upgrade the wifi aerial.
I replaced the standard aerial for am Omni 10dbi aerial from Sitecom . Direct replacement- just unscrew and screw in the new one.
Has it made a difference ? - no difference at all-I have moved it tweaked it- moved it again no detectable improvement-so much for £20.00 of supposed 40% increase in signal strength.
So dont bother folks it does not work. I removed the aerial- no aerial at all and my wifi dropped about 15%
I think I will send it back and demand a refund unless anyone has any useful comment?

stick it inside a large tin can and point the can in the direction of the xbox.

Are you sure you know what a dBi is ?

dBi

dB(isotropic) the forward gain of an antenna compared with the hypothetical isotropic antenna, which uniformly distributes energy in all directions. Linear polarization of the EM field is assumed unless noted otherwise.

I bought a wireless Network Omni Antenna 10dBi
I am no expert on wifi maybe I have bought the wrong aerial. Thats why I was hoping for some useful comment, but never mind I'll get over it.

Yes, well Googled. You bought an aerial which has allegedly has a 10dB higher "gain" than an aerial which does not (and cannot) exist in the real world. The aerial already fitted to your router probably already had a similar "gain" to the one you just purchased, which is why you didn't notice much difference.

The reason why I'm using that word gain in quotes is because the only way that a passive aerial can have "gain" is by altering the directional pickup characteristics of the aerial. The aerials used on most wireless routers typically has a radiation/pickup pattern shaped like a doughnut, with the aerial passing through the hole in the doughnut. So, in certain circumstances the "gain" of the aerial can be less than the hypothetical isotropic one in a given direction (the direction of the plane of the aerial).

I would revert to cable if it was such a p.i.t.n. to route correctly and unobtrusively. I thought wireless would be the easy option but just another way to take your money.

I will send it back and my son can just use a cable to connect his xbox.

Try these babies, may help!? For £30 it's a bargain smile even if you just use them for the xbox.

I have got wireless currently and although it works and is fine, I have got a pair, just for the fact that they are so cheap, if you order over £50 on ebuyer & choose super saver delivery, you can also get free P&P.

Yes, well Googled.

Sound derogative yet again.

I actually bought a 7db aerial for my dg834gt and found it did increase the overall strength of the signal.

I now have a tweaked Business Hub (HGV2700) with my wireless setting on 4 which gives me 100mW.

As you can see from previous post, soon to be going over to homeplug adapters.

I appreciate the comment but the xxxx Xbox is in the same room as the computer and about 10 ft from the wifi router. The router is in the hall.
I dont have a phone socket in the room or I would have tried moving the router.

SO I dont plan on spending £30 when I only need to but a 12ft ethernet cable- about £3.00.
I may use the Powerline or similar for another project I have in mind.

thanks again for the input.
