Moving into a new place

Hi

I've just put a deposit on a new flat that I am moving into next week. The flat has a phone socket and has been lived in previously.

Being a student I'm living pretty close to bank limits, I was wondering what the best method of getting broadband and a phone line is?

I've looked on BT and TalkTalk and it looks as if you cant rent just a phone line so I can get broadband, you have to take out a 12 month contract and a talk package. I really need something that doesn't have a contract as my tenancy agreement at the moment is for 6 months in case it turns out to cost more than I can afford or I dont like the area.

Is there any way to get just a phone line on its own (without a talk package and contract) as I wont be making any calls on the landline?

Also, are there any ISP's that don't have contracts with cheap prices? I'm currently on Be at home but they have changed all of their packages to have a minimum of 12 months contract without paying an extra fee to reduce it to a 3 months notice period.

Any help would be appreciated, it's my first place on my own so sorry if i've asked 'obvious' questions

You are probably going to have to take out a 12 month phone line rental contract as well as any broadband contract. Of course you can cancel early but you'll still have to pay up for the rest of the contract term.

I'm about to move into a new place for a few months and have been looking for shot term contract. Telephone is a minimum of 12 months unfortunately, but Zen internet do a 1 month broadband contract (£50 ish set-up fee though).
How about a mobile phone and mobile broadband?

I think the best way of getting the phone would be from The Post Office. Cheaper installation than BT, possibly free if the line is still connected, and only 15 days notice to cancel. They also do house moves.

I wouldn't get the broadband from them though.

Where to get it depends mainly on how much you intend to download per month. Withe Be you didn't need to worry - and if Be is available at the new place it is probably your best bet - with the 3-month option, even though quite pricey.

I can't imagine a student is going to use the small amounts of bandwidth, so what exchange is it? So we can see what is available.

Have you thought about asking the landlord if they will install the phone line. Or even if its already active.

the Post Office and IDnet do phone lines with monthly contracts. IDnet also do broadband with a monthly contract but the PO's good value broadband + phone line is 12 month minimum.
