Need help with a UK online ADSL2+ coonection

[link to this post]

Hi,

We are having massive problems with a UK online ADSL2+ connection.

We have tried various routers, all with the same problems - i.e. the internet keeps cutting out. I say the internet as it seems to mainly affect web browsing and email. Running a service such as putty to a server and running 'top' is fine.

I can also continue to connect to the router and run the status page updates - this is not showing any dropout.

I am currently using a DrayTek 2820 with the latest firmware. But have also swappeed the rouer for another brand.

I am currently running it on the BT master socket (BT side) to elimate anything on my side.

Having gone into the router I am seeing the following.....

--------------------------- ATU-R Info (hw: annex A, f/w: annex A) -----------

Thanks.

seems to be plenty of SNR margin and it is interleaved. It clocked up ~3000 CRC errors downstream but I don't see any indication of uptime - can you find DSL and PPP session uptime stats on this or the other router ?

I think you're saying that a SSH session to a server is reliable, but the email / web isn't ?

Try checking the MTU via a tweak testing site like http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks or http://www.speedguide.net/analyzer.php

ondded - SSH is fine, get the odd dropout - but usually fine, when the browsers stop.

not sure if this what you mean?

Up Time 22:09:28
TX Packets TX Rate(Bps) RX Packets RX Rate(Bps)
2404417 12417 2434931 5351

MTU is set to 1500

Thanks.

Up Time 22:09:28 - could be the right one, depends if this is the DSL uptime, the router uptime, the PPP session uptime etc. 22 hours isn't bad either way means it staid in overnight since yesterday.

Did you run the tweak test or are you quoting a setting in saying the MTU is set to 1500 ? The former is more reliable as it confirms what's actually happening. I had a Draytek set the MTU to ~1000 if you put in a setting over 1492.

You might do better with a simpler router, there are features on the Draytek that might cause your problem, for example the "block non-HTTP traffic on Port 80" feature.

Hi,
No ran the tweak test - it is reporting 1500.

The router can stay up for weeks - however this uptime is only the uptime of the router (no idea how to find anyother uptime) - it is not the uptime of http - as I say the connection is never really lost, http just times out.

We have tried another router etc., and got exactly the same thing frown

At our wits end to be honest.

About to call ukonline back again........ (but thought I would ask here first)

is it a DNS issue ? can you resolve by IP address at times when HTTP by URL stalls - using OpenDNS servers might show something up, instead of the ISP provided ones.

Try the Draytek forum for help on the uptime - the Netgear I am currently using shows the WAN uptime separate to the router uptime, others show the DSL signal uptime or number of retrains etc to see if it helps see what's going on.
