Just went to 20Mbit (14Mbit)

[link to this post]

So I recently switched from 512k to 8Mbit. For the first few days of service I was getting 14Mbit, so I decided to switch onto the 20Mbit package once I got set down to 8Mbit. I'm now getting 14Mbit again. Since I've only been back on "20Mbit" for 24 hours now, is it possible O2 are still figuring out what speed my line can go at?

I'm no expert at what these figures mean, but comparing them to what I've seen makes me think they're not bad, and that the connection could handle more. All in all I haven't had any major problems with the connection over the past two weeks. Down speed is usually hits 1.7MB/s max, 1.65MB/s average off-peak, and during the evenings, 1.4MB/s.

It should be noted that router is connected in my room, which is on the other side of the house from where the telephone line comes in (though I'd get slower-speeds going over the wireless than through the ethernet, plus there's no plug socket near the telephone line).

Here's the figures from the last hour:

Nothing much wrong with your line. To know if your line could do any better you'd need to get the stats when the router is plugged in to the test socket. That would let you know if your internal wiring is significantly degrading the signal.

Okay, just tried connecting the router at where the telephone line comes into the house and connected the laptop via ethernet. Speedtest inexplicably showed it was slower by a whole Mbit o_O

Don't know what's going on there, might just be an anomalous result caused by server load at the other end or the fact that its a completely different computer.

Anyhoo, 14Mbit is good enough for me. Though it'd be nice to see it sync faster in the coming week.

Speed tests are of interest but it's the router stats which tell the full story.

It is upto 20Meg. When you first had your service with O2 the sync is uncapped, this is so you can see what the fastest speed your line will run at, in your case that is around 14Meg. This is telling you and O2 that on a 20Meg package the speed you'd get is 14.

There is no figuring out to do by O2, your line will continue to run at 14Meg. You might be able to improve your local wiring and get more speed.

Regards

Oh okay. I'm 0.8 miles from my exchange by road distance, would you say 14Mbit is about right at this distance?

The downstream attenuation is a pretty good indicator of likely sync rates and for 22.5dB the chart I use suggests 17000kbps. Your sync of 16191kbps is pretty much spot on I'd say.

I would say that 16191 Kbps Sync Speed was a bit low for a 22.5 dB attenuation; it should be more in the region of 18-19 Meg. I am getting 16090 Kbps from O2 on a 27 dB attenuation.

Could be noisy wiring frown

The connection seems to be making a habit of dropping out to resync at 12Mbit in the evening, with this, FEC+HEC error figures seem to increase. Too many people on?

Based on the stats you gave there is nothing wrong with your connection
