should i get better speeds

[link to this post]

Hi all

should i be getting better speeds ? here are my line stats

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream Connection Speed 2880 kbps 448 kbps Line Attenuation 38 db 10.5 db Noise Margin 13 db 24 db

You are around 2.47 kilometres from your exchange (as the crow flies)

i get about 1.7 - 2.2mb when doing a speed test, is this about right for my line stats or should i get better speed ?

the bt adsl checker says "Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 4Mbps or greater." should this info be taken with a piece of salt?

i only have the 1 master socket , its one of the newer types , connect to pc via Ethernet cable, using a netgear router.

have you tried it in the test socket just to see if you have a faulty face plate? (if so sync will go up) also does the master get fed directly from wires from outside or is there a junction boc somewhere inside the house?

38db atten. should get you a sync over 7Mb on IPStream. With an ADSL2+ provider you ought to be looking around 11Mb.

just spoke with my isp who said "One reason for the low sync is that you have a 13dB noise margin" is this correct or are they trying to fob me off

http://www2.farina1.com/ADSL/default.aspx suggests you would sync at 4000kbps if your line was stable enough to have the default SNR margin of 6dB.

Both!

It is correct.
They are trying to fob you off. It is their job to help you find out why the margin is so high.
There may also be other factors.

Before you ring them again have a read of the Noise margin page and everything in Troubleshooting apart from the Router locking up page on my website.

Eh? Am I misreading the OP's post? An attenuation of 38db should be way better than that. I just put those figures into Farina and it confirms my 'standard' graph. I have 35db on ADSL2+ and during the summer I sync at 13.5Mb - and that's on Be's 9db 'stability' profile.

From memory my atten. with IPStream was 34db and my margin 12db. I got 8128 day in, day out. Never dropped.

My post was in response to the difference made by the 13dB SNR margin.

I agree that an average line with an attenuation of 38dB would sync at 8128kbps. Unfortunately the OP doesn't seem to have an average line.

edited to add: to get 8128 from farina perhaps you swapped the margin/attenuation figures on entry?
