Moving home broadband question

[link to this post]

Good morning,

I will shortly be moving to a rented property as I have sold my house. When I move I will be taking my BT phone number with me. I will be in the rented house for 5 months while I get a new build constructed. I intend to get my mail diverted for 6 months through the post office.

My question is..... If I am taking my phone no with me, do I need to tell my broadband provider(Virgin) that I have moved to maintain my connection? Am i right in thinking that, as i will retain my bt number then the connection will remain active at the exchange and I can therefore plug in my modem and still get connectivity at the rented home??
I have heard numerous horror stories about the timescale Virgin take to reconnect moving families!!
Thanks to all who take the time to reply
Simon

Yes, you'd need to tell Virgin.

No, you will need to get Virgin to place a new order for broadband, at the new address once moved. Even if the number stays the same.

As Matt says. Plus look into whether Virgin offer a Home Move service.

I would also advise talking to the builders about what extension cabling they install. Assuming they talk sensibly, in your situation I would even be willing to buy good CW1308 cable and give it them to install. (Some posters may suggest CAT5 but I think that could be beyond builders' expertise).

You need to watch what BT does carefully - we've just been involved with someone with a house move, taking the number, and BT told Virgin to cease the contract as they would be ceasing the line. It was all a big mistake, as BT got the impression that another line was involved (same name owner). The first clue was an email from Virgin to say they were sorry the customer was leaving.

Virgin were all set to do the move, up to that point - so I think there is a home move service.
