Bonded!!

Due to being unable to get better than 512kb where i live, has anyone here used a bonded adsl service?
are they available for home use or too expensive?

There are many variations of bonding.

MLPPP is the more traditional way to do it. You need an ISP that supports this and would need two lines and two broadband services. In addition, you'd need a router that supports MLPPP such as Cisco with two ADSL WICs.

The other options that are increasing in popularity - which can be bonded over any broadband connection even from different providers. They are broadbond, sharedband and Xrio.

Could you estimate i cost for bonded? Will i be able to convert my weak 512 line into a decent speed of say 2mb or more? Also, are bonded lines ok to use for ps3 gaming?

All depends on the ISP.

Two (or more) phone lines at £11.50~ each
Two (or more) broadband services
If MLPPP, Cisco router with 2 WICs (one per line needed), £1000~ + VAT
If MLPPP, you could build your own, with PCI ADSL cards at £120~ each plus the machine, plus any software required

Not sure on the other solutions but SharedBands site says £23.00 for two bonded lines plus a setup cost of £203.55.

It's not a cheap solution.

PS3 gaming should be fine on a 0.5Meg down, .25Meg upload service. The games generally only use 64kilobits per second. If they have a lot of lag then suggests issues with the ISP or LOTS of errors on the line.

Other PS3 services like iPlayer, video store, Home would benefit from the extra speed.

I can pickup a decent ADSL PCI card for £30!!! for £120 id expect it to make me coffee as well!

There's a reason why I said £120. That particular card (Sangoma) works extremely well (and has been extensively tested) with the linux bonded router software that supports MLPPP.
