Up to 20MB?

[link to this post]

Hi

Just looking for some advice, I'm currently on Zen Active soon to change to Sky Unlimited.

When I originally signed for Broadband my estimated speed was a lot higher than it is now.
It's now 2.5 was roughly 5-6 before (actual speeds have also plummeted).

I'm on the Elstree exchange and extremely close, so was curious why I would only get estimated 2.5 and why no ISP will offer me more than a up to 8MB rather than up to 20MB?

I can't seem to find any clear info that explains it, I live on a new-ish estate, my exchange has been 21CN WBC enabled, does my estate need some kind of change over as well?

Sorry if these are silly questions, kind of dropped out of the loop over the last couple of years in regards to Broadband progression. frown

Thanks
Chris B

Can you see if you can find and post your line stats please? See here for help if you need it.

Is this ok?
System Up Time 03:43:29
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 108051 114506 0 920 3125 03:43:01
LAN 10M/100M 114257 106693 0 3094 1045 03:43:25
WLAN 54M 10854 10178 0 343 138 03:43:19

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2720 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 27.0 db 14.5 db
Noise Margin 11.9 db 22.0 db

Apologies for the bad formatting. Uptime is low as I've been having some IP conflicts last few days on my iphone and xbox but not got round to sorting it out.

Can you plug straight into the test socket and give the stats?

unfortunately not without a lot of work and moving furniture, but I did do that previously as Zen asked me to do this and there was no difference then.

What difference would this make?
Surely if I do a postcode check on a broadband site that estimates my connection at 2.5 max that won't be related to which socket i'm using?

Your line attentuation is 27 db meaning you're on a nice short line and an estimated line speed of 12 to 16 mbps

Your currently getting 2 and abit

So either your internal wiring is shocking or you have a line fault.

Do you have a test socket?

If so post your stats using this!

When you say test socket, I assume you mean the main socket which you have to unscrew the front panel and plug the router in directly?

Exactly so laugh

It's a pain I know especially if you have extensions in your house as you won't be able to use them!

Have you removed the bell wire if you do have extensions?

ok so connected to the main socket directly these are the results

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 3390 4548 0 8030 26948 00:03:29
LAN 10M/100M 689 0 0 717 0 00:03:49
WLAN 54M 5630 4337 0 26923 8575 00:03:43

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7296 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 27.0 db 14.5 db
Noise Margin 11.9 db 22.0 db

Router detects better downstream but speedtest still shows same result.
i don't use my own extension leads but router uses a secondary socket pre-installed in the house.
Zen made nothin of this result last time would be interested to hear what u peeps suggest...

thanks again

This indicates your internal wiring is introducing a lot of noise which is limiting your speed.
