It's hardly a new problem, or unique to the iPhone.

Extract from the manual for my phone:
Your phone has a built-in antenna. As with any other radio-transmitting device, do not touch the antenna unnecessarily when the phone is switched on. Contact with the antenna affects call quality and may cause the phone to operate at higher power levels than otherwise needed.

It's a Nokia 3310, purchased at least 10 years ago.

As Apple say (in effect) here- if holding the phone in a particular way affects the call quality, don't hold it that way.

Well the idea isn't new but what is new is having to touch the antenna in order to hold the device smile

Just about every cell phone in current production has the antenna located at the bottom.

The problem apparently occurs because the iPhone4 has two antennas, one for the phone, and one for wi-fi, and if you hold the phone at the bottom left hand side, your fingers bridge the connection between both antennas, which causes the phone to malfunction. Apple's answer ? Buy a case to stop this happening. As I've said before, it's overpriced junk.

Ah well, in that case I'll leave it for a week or two and pick one up cheap from the stock that the dealers couldn't get rid of.

LOL - now that one got a good smile out of me.

Even in the sleepy town where I live people were queuing outside the mobile phone stores yesterday morning to get their iphone. No matter how much some people don't like them they ought to admit that apple at least have caught the public conciousness and they could sell anything if they put an 'i' in the front and leak just enough information months before it is available.

And yes, I do have an iPhone 3GS and find it an excellent device. The 4 doesn't have enough over it for me to replace and so will wait till the 5 next year to see if it is worth it and if not I may change to another handset (assuming anyone comes up with one that I like).

I don't doubt that clever marketing has played a significant part in the success of several Apple products, but if they were even a tenth as bad as some like to make out then they would have died...

That may well be the case but I had one of those phones and NEVER had any issues with signal

Oh and the 3310 is made of plastic so you can't actually touch the aerial unless you remove the covers so not really the same thing
