How do you know this? Is there some record of the SMTP used or some display? Usually, at least with OE & WM, with a successful send there is no indication of the SMTP used; only if the send fails does it tell you.

Yes. A popup appears telling you the smtp server connected to amd a progress bar as the transfer process takes place. Plenty of time to read it.

Step by step so I don't forget what I did:-

1) I changed both, as you suggest. I also changed the robertos SMTP selection to O2 SMTP.

I tried a send from robertos and got

Sending of message failed.
An error occurred sending mail: SMTP server smtp.o2.co.NIX is unknown. The server may be incorrectly configured. Please verify that your SMTP server settings are correct and try again.

2) I corrected the O2 SMTP address.

Sent from robertos via O2 SMTP server with no problem.
Header on the received email is via O2 and no mention of Tsohost servers.

3) Altered personal domain SMTP selection to normal and saved just to clear any wayward setting. Then re-selected the O2 server that works on robertos and saved again.
Error message as above with the Tsohost (personal) SMTP server name instead of "o2".

4) Set the robertos SMTP server to be the default instead of the personal one.
Robertos still sends fine via O2.

Odder and odder!

5) Now, the net result of the above is that both robertos and the personal are set to use the O2 SMTP server, but the default server (which should really only alter what is initally selected at new account setup time) has been changed from the personal to robertos.

A send from the personal goes via robertos SMTP server (which is on Tsohost), not the O2 one that is selected.

6) Corrected the personal SMTP server but didn't select it.
Sends via robertos.

7) Select and save personal SMTP server on the personal domain.
Sends via robertos.

8) Reset the default to the personal domain server.
Sends correctly.
robertos sends via O2

9) Select personal SMTP on robertos account.
robertos sends via personal.

10) Select robertos SMTP server on robertos account.
Sends via robertos SMTP

My conclusion from the above is that TB on the personal domain account is always using the default SMTP server, and ignoring the selection in its setup screen.

The two unique things that spring to mind are that it was the first account set up and it is also the first in (so far as I can ascertain unsortable) list of accounts/folders on the left.

Picking up on your last point about unsortable account listings, the Mailtweak add-on includes a check box for Account Settings Cleanup which allows you to order the list of accounts as you wish. It is currently a pre-release version available at http://mailtweak.mozdev.org/installation.html but I have used it for a number of months without any problems.

There are lots of other nice little enhancements in the add-on as well like a simple and effective mail delay set-up to send e-mails at a later time and date of your choice. Like all these things, use at your own risk, but I certainly haven't got any complaints about it.

It is a bit of an irritation but I can live with it until released/incorporated. Fortunately the one at the top is the one with most folders and traffic, and unless I increase the number of folders I can still detect other incoming by leaving those accounts/folders collapsed most of the time.

Just realised I have misunderstood your posting. I have a number of e-mail accounts, all of which feed into Thunderbird. I have created a number of folders corresponding to these accounts within my inbox and use rules to send incoming mail to the correct folder. I order them by putting a serial number in the folder name - e.g. 1) John's ISP mail. 2) John's Hotmail 3) John's Googlemail etc. I can then reorder any time I wish by changing the serial number. The Thunderbird default is to sort the folders in alpha order so the serial numbers always read from 1) at the top of the list.

Sorry for the confusion but hope you like the add-on anyway.

I am receiving and sending email from multiple domains though. Not multiple mailboxes on one domain.

As you say, the folders within a domain sort alphabetically, (apart from the preset ones), but the domains themselves stay resolutely in creation order.

I've just realised that their is an option to configure the Inbox (which I must have used when I set up Tbird years ago). If you go to the account settings for each account and go to the server settings, there is an Advanced button. Click on this and you are presented with the option to use an Inbox for this server's account (which is presumably what you have got checked), Global Inbox (Local Folders Account) which I what I have checked or Inbox for different account.

As I have everything going to a single global inbox, I can then set up folders within that for each account and use rules to send an incoming e-mail to the relevant folder. You can order the folders by numbering them before the text description.

Sorry it has taken me so long to remember the setting but hope it helps.

I know I'm beginning to sound like I'm raising objections for the sake of it, but I'm not.

I too forget my early experiments, and did try setting up in the way you describe. It doesn't suit what I want, in that less than 50% of incoming gets sent to sub-folders and a lot left in the Inbox for the domain.

Things are fine as I have them, except it would have been nice if the domain level could have been sorted at will. But I have got used to that.

The problem I raised seems to be a bug in TB, in that the first domain in the panel can only use the default SMTP server. Select any other for it and the setting is ignored.

It's not a case of raising objections, it's just trying to find a way to make it work.

There is one thing where you have me confused. You say that setting up as I have my system doesn't work as 50% of the mail is left in the domain inbox. If you are set up as I am, there are no domain inboxes. There is only one inbox under Local Folders which fields all incoming mail. Any breakdown beyond that is down to whatever rules are set up.

As you note, the first domain in the panel has to use the default SMTP server and the mailtweak add-on won't allow you to move that domain down the list. However, if all mail is going to a global inbox, I would have thought that was irrelevant.
