Through-put and actually connect speed

Ok these are my connect status from my o2 router.

Im asking about my through-put as my speed test results are showing 12.5meg but im connected on a 16meg line. So there seems to be about 4meg loss on the through-put.

Any ideas?

The expected throughput is between roughly 83% and 84% of the connection speed. So you should get between 13,300kbps and 13,500kbps.

The loss is TCP and ATM overheads, those are the data packaging protocols that chop the data up into packets and account for the other 17%-18%. The throughput speed is actual data.

If you were not on LLU before so had an IP Profile, then those overheads are part of the reason the IP Profile was always so much lower than your connection speed, as it included most of them.

Do you know there is an O2 forum here? If you have any other O2-specific questions you may get quicker answers there .

Speedtests are not necessarily the most reliable measure of throughput. If anything else is happening on the line then some throughput will be lost. There is an overhead on data that would lose some of the speed. A speedtest cannot necessarily use the whole of the bandwidth. etc.etc.

Try doing 4 or 5 downloads from good sites simultaneously and see what the combined speed is. That should give you more of an idea of the real world.
