is this available to the ordinary punter...

That link gives me a weird but interesting result when reading the part about FTTC...
quote"Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC by 30th June 2011. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 36.1Mbps and upstream line speed of 7.8Mbps."

My exchange is enabled, but the area i am in currently is not There is no cabinet or service supplying "fibre" on "My telephone line".

Infact in the town there is only one cabinet that has/is suppling FTTC which is several miles away from me. The exchange itself was done early last year and for my specific line/number/area the install of a cabinet has been delayed/put back on more than 4 occasions.

So in short, what do they mean by the "...Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 36.1Mbps and upstream line speed of 7.8Mbps."
part??? Nobody near me gets any FTTC service (there is no cabinet)!!!!!!

Only way is really via the BT Wholesale checker which can do the line to cabinet look up for you.

Most benefit as in perceived best ROI for Openreach, also as its early in the rollout it may simply be an area is going to get more roll-out in the future, just doing the easy low hanging fruit first

BT are simply guessing at this stage, clearly they got at least some of it wrong as evidenced in their poor takeup in the welsh area they picked that not only was short lines (bad choice) but also had existing VM services. I am scratching my head as to why BT exec's are scratching their heads over it, what did they expect?

BT seem to be making the same mistakes they did with ADSL. Focusing on the large city centre exchanges which will have Virgin Media Competition & generally short lines means that take up will be low.

It is no real suprise that the highest take up in Cardiff is in Whitchurch a mainly residential area and a fairly affuent area

BT would be better of focussing on the outer areas of towns and cities many will not have cable and even where they do a lot of new build will have taken place and that will not have cable. Outer areas also tend to have long lines. These areas are also normally residential & tend to have a higher income hence more likely to take up Broadband

BT just seems to be playing the numbers game. Enable a large central exchange and they can claim 30,000 odd subscribers on paper, the fact that many of the babinets will not be enabled will be glossed over.

I would suspect that BT would get double the take up if they focussed on the right areas

I assume you input your phone number? If so it probably means your cabinet is going to be enabled at some time, but the date is just a placeholder to let them show that.

The "currently supports" is to do with the distance you are from the PSTN cabinet. The fibre cabinet if/when installed should be within 20-50 metres of it.

The estimated speed will be conservative. Mine was lower than that and I get 39992/1000 sync.

Not quite, eight small rural exchanges in Cornwall have gone live this week.

Yep entered my phone number on the checker. I also freely admit there are a couple of ways you can interpret the information that it gave back.

I think with your explanation you are right, but ideally they need to re-write what it reports to people like me, could be alot clearer/make more sense. The part that states...
"..where consumers have received downstream line speed of 36.1Mbps and upstream line speed of 7.8Mbps" is obviously pure BT fantasy laugh

Roll on June... If it gets put back this time i think that will make it a nice round half-dozen times the date has changed.

Oh and nice link, far less messy than BT retails site smile

Is there anywhere to check when an area will be completed...

Are there any lists/commitments to fully cover an exchange ?
Hi, BT WBC 21CN FTTC info data sheet which looks to be kept upto date.
