The fault being detected is on the line and LLU still uses the line and pays a rental fee to Openreach for it. I'm surprised to hear that this wasn't already possible.

Yes, I think the TAM where installed sits between the line and the CP equipment

Yep, all LLU lines (where the dialling tone is provided by the CP,and not BTw is connected through TAMs ties. This means that Pair Quality Tests are available to the engineer using their JDSU/Exfo/Hawk. But then this has been the case for a few years.

I seem to recall CIDT trials a year ago or so, with engineers having to do a co-op call when the EU's kit was in sync. I also seem to recall it being a bit of a chocolate fire guard !

This simply does not work. There is only one way to find a HR fault and that is an engineer busting his nuts all day with a 301 / hawk, a butt set and the time to do it. I have seen numerous end to end tests (much better than any one way test such as this) pass a line as perfect - only to plug in a phone and have unholy crackles on the line and no dsl.
How many lines do we have that test unbalanced but then are fine using a meter? or line that test ok and have 20V of battery on them?
Always good when an improvement is made but I hope CPs dont start taking this for gospel and refusing engineer visits based on some rickety old test head result....

Loop resistance isn't gonna tell you if you have an HR. You need single wire resistance for that which will be difficult to achieve without a grunt at the far end. So I would imagine that will require an engineer visit. Unless they have come up with a cunning way of earthing the NTE remotely or a self install megger.

We've given up trying to get an engineer at work. The lines basically work anyway but they could be better. One of them is apparently reported by the automated systems as being in excess of 40,000km long (don't ask me, ask Timico, lol). Despite that no-one is prepared to risk getting an SFI out so despite being 54db it has been left syncing at 1.5Mb. The speed doesn't bother us but the instability is annoying. It'll be okay now for a few months but when the weather is 'on the turn' it can be up and down more than a [censored]'s knickers.

It's still impossible to get anyone to look at it though :-/
