Bell Wire

Hello,

My Broadband has always been extremely slow (around 480KB/S) and I recently found out about the 'bell wire' fix. However, after opening up my main phone socket, I am somewhat confused as to which wire it is, or even if it's still connected at all. I have an ADSL Splitter underneath the main socket so I thought this might mean the bell wire has already been dealt with.

The ADSL Splitter part has 3 wires and 3 slots. They're arranged like so:

Orange into Slot 2
Green into Slot 3
White into Slot 5

There's also a black wire that is not connected to anything.

I know it's supposed to be in slot 3 but the fact that my wire is green not orange (as I gather it's supposed to be) and that my master socket seems to have been bypassed both made me worried that I would be disconnecting the wrong thing.

The wire terminated in position 3 is green, because the wire feeding away to the extension/s is external grade dropwire or downlead. The bell wire 'trick' will make no difference to your sync rate, as what the extensions are connected to is a faceplate filter, hence your current sync is as good as, internal wiring wise.

What is your attenuation on your modem?

What modem do you have if you don't know how to get that information?

It's a Netgear DGN2000.
