Wireless High Speed Internet

Hey,

Ive been looking at some wireless ISPs in my area, i had a question before i plunge in.

Do the connections drop a lot? Wireless has never been a stable technology and am worried it will keep dropping (interference?)

Take 3G on mobile for example, i could one second have a really good signal, then the next its gone, will it be the same with wireless broadband.

Note they provide the Nanostation M5

if you have a nanostation ina fixed location with a clear view of the base station the signal strength should be reliable unless some trees or buildings grow into the space.

So anything in the way of the base and receiver will hinder the connection?

It has the potential to, a lot depends on the wireless frequency used.

So i take it, its not a very good connection to use for gaming?

Fixed wireless is very different to mobile broadband. The antenna is installed with reasonable signal, which usually requires line-of-sight. With a clear line-of-sight there is nothing to affect the signal strength in the same way as 3G would be affected.

As the ISP is using nanostations M5's then they will likely be using 5.4Ghz or 5.8Ghz which are used for outdoor fixed wireless. Therefore the service should not suffer interference from normal home Wi-Fi in 2.4Ghz and 5.2Ghz.

Fixed wireless can actually have better ping times than ADSL if backhauled to the internet over fibre (leased line) pings could be as low as 5~10ms.

What's the Wireless ISP you are looking at?

It can be good, all depends on how the service is setup, i.e. proof is in the pudding. Perhaps visit someone who already has one of the connections running
