How does a Telecoms/ISP company work

I am new to the IT industry and was just wondering if someone could fill me in on how a Telecoms/ISP company works, from the ground up?

I seriously do! But first what do you know about IT?

Well I just started my course.. I know a little about web design and linux. I have just started a course doing visual basics and C# and C++... Got a friend who knows linux and servers and he is basically starting to train me before I do a redhat course.. So I am really at the beginning stages as such. I want to expand my knowledge as much as I can.
