still not saying how you will fund it

I don't think it's the object of a petition to set out logistics. It might give an indication of demand - the biggest threat I perceive to roll-out is low take-up. If take-up wildly exceeds all expectations so far then perhaps there might be a reasonable expectation of better things to come, so does it - or how can the take up in areas already connected be improved?

Around here we've still only got access to sub-8meg speed, with most of us running at less than 3-4MB, no access to faster services or LLU, which is lower than the national average; this being the case even if it only shows interest I'll sign.

As it stands, I already pay £30 to get a semi-decent 3MB connection on what I've got, I'd be willing to pay a reasonable amount to get a faster connection!

As it's Conference season here's a silly idea for a politician looking for a gimmick. Infrastructure spending to boost the economy - right? Well, I reckon my village was "lucky" enough to get unexpected FTTC 'cause the county council recently installed a cycle route which necessitated relaying BT ducting so it was easy to blow the fibre through.

So how about aligning a new network of cycle routes with FTTC expansion (both rural and urban, especially for the non-commercial areas) (AFAP) and as a requirement install new ducting. Hey presto government facilitates all its policy objectives:
- superfast broadband
- infrastructure spending to stimulate the economy
- carbon and traffic reduction (more people can work at home and have access to sustainable transport)
- joined-up government.

I'm sure there have been sillier ideas, even or especially in government! Even TBB could up its sustainable credentials with a sideline in cycle tours around scenic local exchanges, Andrew!

As I guess, all who read or post on this tbb site at least know one end of a light bulb from the other, so it's natural most of us want the fastest connection we can get (given the economics).

However, for the average Joe in th street who just wants to send a few e-mails and do a bit of surfing, there's nothing wrong with 1.5Mbps.

I had that speed for years (even lower before ADSL). Was very happy with it. A bit clunky with graphics content and Microsoft's mega-sized updates, but it worked.

Would't want to go back, but I could if necessary.

The guidance on my local council's petition site says you have to petition them to do something by specifying an action and it has to be something in their remit.

Otherwise it is a waste of time and just becomes a "somebody should do something about it" moan.

Possible examples :-

A petition calling on the Treasury to provide 100% first year capital allowances on next generation assets

A petition calling on DCMS to invest £500m per year on accelerating the rollout of NGA

etc

As government doesn't actually DO very much, you can only really ask them to change the regulatory or tax environment and hope it achieves something. Either that or drop money from helicopters.
