Re: Orange ISP Connection Drop Outs and Slow Speeds

In reply to a post by RobertoS:
As for a 6dB variation in reported attenuation between different makes of router, I have never seen anything approaching that posted on these forums by anyone. My personal experience is of Linksys, two SpeedTouch 585v6s, and several Broadcom-based Netgears. The range of attenuations reported was 3dB.
So, I think it's safe to infer you have never even tested the Netgear DGN1000! It reports an unusually low attenuation figure compared to every other modem I've tried. I can prove a 6dB diffence right here on my line in front of your very eyes, against a Thomson ST585v7 and a Technicolor TG582n.

In reply to a post by RobertoS:
As the attenuation reported is under 27dB, and this appears to be the figure used in the "training" of the line when negotiating the sync speed, (as the higher attenuation router always obtains a commensurately lower sync), your comment is in any case irrelevant.
Um, no. That's not how sync speed is achieved. Modems on the same line reporting the same attenuation don't all give the same sync! This is mainly due to differences in noise handling and bit allocation. I can also demonstrate this to you in front of your very eyes. In any case, my low estimate was based primarly on the noise condition of the line not line attenuation.

Actually the solution is very simple - dump Orange as quick as you can. There is unlikely to be anything wrong with your line, and once you have been round in circles a few times with their technical support you will realise that you are speaking to idiots reading from a script. It took me two months and emails to the CEO's office to get them to sort my line speed out, after they "upgraded" me from 3Mbps to less than 1Mbps. According to my routers stats, my negotiated line speed is generally around 14Mbps, in reality it wanders between less than 1Mbps and 10Mbps.

Yes i think you are right. Its been a while since i posted, and everyone was very helpful in their responses.
An update on what happened after your advice; I installed the Iplate moved the router to the plate and removed all extension wiring in the house. I rang Orange back and got nowhere, very disappointing. It got to the point that they made me jump through the script and fault finding and when the time came to have my profile reset they then informed me that i had to pay for a BT engineer. My thoughts at that point were see out the contract for less money than an engineer call out and then go to a better provider. My contract ends the end of this month. I will take ISP recommendations now smile

Stats at the moment are
3070 kbps 1095kbps
LA 23db 7db
NR 17db 7db

If the forum orange fairies want to look into my case then feel free to pm me. 8 year mobile phone customer that you will also loose at the same time...

Probably best to start a new thread with the stats and a link to what samknows says about your exchange.

Connection - Plusnet Extra Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 54.0/14.9Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

Quick update.

I had a speed bump, not much but it was at
4542kbps 1079kbps
LA 23db 7db
NM 15db 7db

The above was on a dg834g router. It had stronger wifi than the N150 from orange. Tonight i read that the V2 of the dg834 i had did not support ASDL2+
As a matter of course i went back to the orange supplied n150.
These are the stats taken from the N150
4536kbps 1167KBPS
LA 25.8db 13.9db
NM 25.7db 6.3db

Why has the NM jumped so much? Am i understanding this right that if the connect stays constant the line management should automatically bump my speed up.
I should also add that i have just discovered there was a faulty noise filter on a cordless phone that led to the broadband dropping everytime a call came in or was dialed out. Feel bit silly i didnt pick up on that earlier.
Any advice or thoughts?

Many thanks.

The netgear supports ADSL2+ Check version of firmware should be 2.10.22. Download from www.netgear.com, if required.
From your stats it looks as though router is showing ADSL2.
To me, although others read differently, the latest figures show download is under performing. You can get different test results from routers
Try re booting in morning. it is also possible the line is banded ( due to filter problems)
See what www.speedtester.bt.com stats are and post here.

The N150 supports adsl2+, but my old G vers2 router doesnt according to what i read on the netgear forums.
The N150 router is locked to orange firmware, i have just updated this to the V2.1.00.44_RG
ADSL firmware version is logged as 3.4.4.0.0.1

I have only just updated the firmware, and thinking about it i should have rebooted it after it was successfully installed. I will reboot tomorrow morning. Cant do the speed test at the moment on that link you provided will do that in the morning and post here later.

Thanks for the response.

Definitely appears download has been banded. Exactly same speed as my unit for couple of weeks until DSLAM upped to 12.3Mbps now, on higher attenuation and different ISP.
BT Speedtester should show 4 to 21 Mbps down acceptable. May show 1 - 4 Mbps acceptable.
Check that no disconnections for couple of days, then ask Orange for reset.
