As for restarting the router I probably did switch it off and on but other times I just let it fix itself

In reply to a post by Anonymous: Sorry, worded it badly.
It's not slow speeds I'm concerned about, it's the disconnections.

You miss the point, because it hasn't been spelled out.
Using the test socket and getting the stats then will tell us if there is anything wrong with your internal phone wiring. If there is anything wrong with your phone wiring it would almost certainly cause the slow speeds, but more importantly to you it could cause the disconnections.
If they stop, we know where to look. If they continue, we are then looking for the probable external cause for you to report to your ISP.
As Zarjaz said, if you don't try the test socket, we are urinating into the wind.

In reply to a post by Anonymous: And yeah, I know I'm too lazy to check out the test socket, but I just came back from France and was expecting to relax, not to go around unscrewing faceplates and such
>_<
I'll probably get round to the test socket within 1-2 days, but not now, sorry.
It takes less time than writing that post!

fair point lol.
Ok well I looked at the lights when I got disconnected.
Firstly they were flashing like normal, then when it started disconnecting they went green, no flashing, and then red for a second then all of them went off except for the power one, and then gradually went back to normal.
Hope this helps,

Last thing if I find that when using the test socket everything is fine, can I continue using the test socket or not? If not, where do I go from there?

Yes, you can keep the router plugged into the test socket indefinitely. I had mine in there for three years with all the wires hanging out until I chucked a faceplate on it.

do you need the other lines that are wired into the front plate you taken out (as that disconnects all the extensions) if not just leave it as it is with the main cordless phone plugged into the filter at that socket
if you do need the other phone sockets, some times you can get the front plate to fit into the filtered side of filter so the house extensions are filtered
other way is buy an Filtered ADSL front plate and wire the extensions into it

Is the router getting very hot? That can cause what you are getting, simple over-heating,and using the wireless connection makes it worse. What sort is it? Some do, but can usually be sorted out.
Edit - ah, TG587nv2.
I don't know a lot about that one, but 585s needed one side propping up 1"/2.5cm or so to help a through-flow of air. Make sure it is on a hard surface, not a soft mat or carpet. Away from direct sunlight and radiators.

Neater to put it back, but there are things we can do. Extensions won't work without some sort of faceplate. See my ring/bell wire page. Or fit an iPlate or filtered faceplate as others have suggested. I think you will find a fairly big speed increase that you will want to maintain.
Let's see if it is a over-heating problem first, as that will continue even using the test socket, dammit .

So I can use the test socket as the 'main socket'? The only downside will be wires hanging out?
Also what would you consider hot or over heating? So hot that you can't keep your hand over it for more than 3 seconds? Or warmish kind of hot.
I'm going to get the test socket out this afternoon, but I have to remove the massive wooden cabinet >_>
